Most accidents are caused by human error.
Far more are avoided by the presence of humans on the flight deck.
In 2019, a survey of 22,000 people ...... indicated that 70% of travelers would be prepared to fly in fully autonomous aircraft.
Count me in the 30%. It's all very well doing these tests under laboratory type and ideal conditions, but real life is different.

The technology may all be well and good until the ***** (quite literally) hits the fan! Having back up pilots on the ground in touch by satellite uplink to take over in extremis won't cut it! If I am in danger I want to know that the flight crew have some skin in the game (or arses on the line) too!

QF32 might not have ended so successfully if the robots and their software had been in command.

I’d prefer to have a couple of pink frightened humanoids up front with a working “give me back control and you can feck off til we need you again” button which actually worked.

The Max saga is a prime example of automation gone wrong, as is the industry’s realisation that even the NG level of automation has had it’s casualties and basic poling skills are dangerously in short supply.

Welcome aboard the World's first fully automatic pilotless aircraft. Now sit back and enjoy your flight, secure in the knowledge that nothing can go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, go wrong - click.

Definitely not for me.

If I was a ground pilot connected by satlink I’d ignore severe wx and just plough through it. It’s not like my coffee will get spilled or me dinner end up on the ceiling. I would probably get an end of year pay bonus for all the fuel I saved in not doing enroute CB and TS diversions.

“Ladies and gentlemen this is the ground pilot speaking. You have some heavy turbulence ahead. Please be seated with your seat belts fastened. I’ll be just darting to the dunny out back for a few minutes...”

Sev CAT? Nah. Stay at optimum level. Get an even bigger bonus!

Now what about automated hosties?

As it is an economy measure, how about binning all windows? Once airborne there is nothing to see, indeed with 9 across only 22% get a view anyway. Best flight I had was in an Airbus with a ventral camera view.

Um...what happens with:

a) a total onboard AC failure a knot or two after V1, and
b) the RAT doesn’t auto extend and needs to be done manually?

Will that be added to the escape slide instructions as a sub para?

Just puttin’ it out there for a cud chew.

I read not long ago that someone had mooted the idea of an aircraft with 'virtual' windows, a screen where the windows should be. I imagine it would offer substantial savings in the cost of building the fuselage.

Wasn't the original draft design of Concord windowless?

The windows were probably added with the letter 'E'.

That's a 747F carrying TVs from China, isn't it?

A virtual window could:

Enable everyone to have a view without the wing blocking the view.
Enable the view to be night or day based on body clock
Avoid viewing confusing things such a engine fire, approaching SAM, engine exploding etc

The number of times my entertainment system has gone down I would not trust a 'virtual window' and I am not sitting in a windowless tube.
Avoid viewing confusing things such a engine fire, approaching SAM, engine exploding etc
You could put these things into the simulation. Any disruption down the back chuck in an engine fire or a fighter escort to concentrate their minds.
