Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
From a tweet of skynews:
At least two people are feared dead after an Air India Express flight carrying 191 passengers crash landed at Calicut Airport in Kerala
Erase if it is not legal to copy paste tweets
They had another over-run much more serious in 2010

They should stop building ravines at the end of runways.
Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
No matter how long they build the runways these guys will figure out a way to land short or long and screw things up.

Better still, for some operators, stop building ENDS of runways? They should stop building ravines at the end of runways.

Didn't the USN have a trial back in the 50s with a circular runway?
Google circular runways.

Here is Henk Hesselink advancing the idea later on a BBC news item:

Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
The big question is why did he hold off for 20 mins after the first approach instead of diverting. I would guess waiting for a thunderstorm to pass. Vis 2,000m, wind no problem he put it down, where though and at what speed. Wonder if the runway was flooded and he went water skiing off the end. He did have 9,300' to play with though. I think that we can all guess the actual cause.

Significant tailwind, I.e. high groundspeed on wet runway. Touchdown point ?

Missed that Speedy. He landed on 10, bloody hell I assumed 28. ILS both ends. Perhaps less low level scud that end but what an idiot.ExSp33db1rd wrote: ↑Sat Aug 08, 2020 6:45 amSignificant tailwind, I.e. high groundspeed on wet runway. Touchdown point ?

This sort of idiocy is normal in India.
Wet runway, big tailwind, probably landed deep, fast or both...off the end!

Here in Jockistan we had a chinless idiot do exactly that in a 146 of Betty Airways on Islay.
He buried the thing up to its oxters in the putty beyond the runway end. £3M of damage, which he paid for in loose change out of his pocket money which he gets from his German mummy.
The exact location of the burial is forever known as Holding Point Charlie.

Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
There's always another factor though, else this sort of thing would happen every week in India.
In this case it might be that 10 is quite a downhill slope as you near the end. Just what you don't need. Thank goodness it didn't burn, or it would have been a different story for the pax.

Any comment on the background of the Captain and the cockpit CRM issues it may create?

Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
Given that he had held for 20 minutes it seems strange that he would have elected to land downwind as it were. He had had plenty of time to choose and plan his approach. It is possible his decision was precipitated by a incipient fuel shortage (i.e. not enough to divert) coupled with his desire for better approach visibility?

Re: Air India Express down at Kozhikode
GG it would be interesting to know his fuel situation. Anyway a cock up.
