An airplane carrying nearly 80 passengers and crew slid off the taxiway at Pittsburgh International Airport on Wednesday evening.

Airport officials said that a Delta Air Line plane — a Boeing 717, Flight 2231 — was departing for Atlanta with 77 people on board when it “exited a taxiway” just prior to takeoff near a runway at about 6:30 p.m.

Officials said that no injuries were reported and that buses were dispatched to help passengers exit the plane. The passengers were then shuttled to the airside terminal.

Delta Air Lines released the following statement:

“While on taxi-out prior to departure, Delta Flight 2231 from Pittsburgh to Atlanta exited the taxiway paved surface. Delta teams worked with the airport authority to safely transport customers back to the terminal. We apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience and are working to reaccommodate them as quickly as possible.”

Delta provided another plane for passengers that took off after midnight Thursday.

The National Weather Service reported light snow at the time of the incident, along with foggy conditions and three-quarters of a mile of visibility.

The airport remained open, and the incident had no impact on other flights or operations, airport officials said.

A crew was working Thursday morning to pull the plane back onto the taxiway.

Airplane skids off taxiway at Pittsburgh International Airport
No injuries have been reported.

PITTSBURGH —
An airplane slid off an icy taxiway at Pittsburgh International Airport Wednesday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Crews used large cranes Thursday evening to remove the plane that slid off the taxiway. The workers managed to get the plane off the ground and back onto the taxiway.

Delta Air Lines flight 2231 to Atlanta had 77 people on board when it left the taxiway prior to takeoff near Runway 10R just before 6:30 p.m., airport spokesman Bob Kerlik said.

At 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, airport officials said all passengers had been safely deplaned and shuttled to the airport terminal. There were no reported injuries.

The plane remained at the intersection of the runway and the taxiway Thursday morning. The airport remained open and there was no impact to other operations, officials said.

A passenger who was on the plane, Tanya Penniman, said at 8:30 p.m., two hours after the incident, that crews were taking the evacuation slide off the plane and the fire department was going to set up stairs in the back of the plane to get everyone off.

Penniman said she was off the plane and on a bus at 9:05 p.m.
