Fatal crash at Headcorn on 09/05/2021

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Fri May 14, 2021 6:24 pm

An excellent helicopter sortie today at Headcorn, spoiled somewhat by the news that this occurred last Sunday. The pilot was part of the well known Stampe aerobatic display team based at the airfield, and who I had seen out practicing two weeks before. Mr Buchanan, a retired EasyJet pilot, was a well known and much liked man at the airfield.
A stunt pilot has died after the light aircraft he was flying plummeted and crashed into a field. The man, named locally as Angus Buchanan, was killed in the crash at around 4.30pm on Sunday near Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent. The experienced stunt pilot was flying with three other planes when it appeared to have ‘performed a stall turn and lost control’, one witness told Kent Online. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yes, tragic. Worked with Chris and Bill in Dan and BA.

Very last glimpse I had of G-AWEF, landing on 03, taken as I walked to the car last time I was down at Headcorn, after watching their delightful display practice session.

The media use of the term 'stunt' pilot always annoys me when it is used in relation to a well practiced formation display that sadly occasionally results in an accident. The only stunts I saw in a display were those carried out by the Barnstormers Flying Circus in the 1970's. The flour bombing act that they did seemed unregulated and I wasn't surprised to witness a mid-air collision between a Tiger Moth and a Stampe at Weston-Super-Mare airfield during that act in 1972. The Stampe was one of the Rothman Team aircraft. Fortunately it happened at very low level and there were no fatalities....but it did make me feel distinctly queasy. A horrible sight.

In retrospect I regret using that source.
