Everyone aboard the plane was presumed dead, Rutherford County Fire Rescue said in a statement. In addition to the Laras, the victims were identified as Jennifer J. Martin, David L. Martin, Jessica Walters, Jonathan Walters and Brandon Hannah, all from Brentwood, Tennessee.

The Cessna Citation 501 crashed into Percy Priest Lake east of Nashville on Saturday morning shortly after departing Smyrna Airport for Palm Beach, Florida, the agency said. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the cause of the crash.

In 2018, she married Joe, a workaday actor born in San Diego and raised in Newport Beach, California. In a career that spanned the 1980s to the 2010s, the highlight was portraying Tarzan on television's "Tarzan: The Epic Adventures."

Jennifer and David Martin and Jonathan and Jessica Walters were church leaders; Brandon Hannah was Gwen Lara's son-in-law.

Before the identities of the presumed deceased were announced, the church issued a statement that read, in part: "The Shamblins, Hannahs and Laras appreciate your concern, support and prayers."


No mention about pilots.
Must assume owner/pilot at the controls.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A small jet that crashed into Percy Priest Lake Saturday morning, killing seven leaders of a Brentwood church, began dropping dramatically just 90 seconds into its flight, air traffic control records show.

ATC radio recordings also reveal that, when the pilot responded to controllers directing him to turn, there is the sound of a possible alarm in the cockpit. Some pilots told NewsChannel 5 that it sounded unusual, while others suggested such sounds would be expected during takeoff.

Those are the type of issues that investigators will be reviewing in the days ahead.

FAA altitude data shows the Cessna C501, a small business jet, appears to have briefly regained altitude before plummeting into the lake from 2,900 feet in just seconds in a high-impact crash.

All seven people on board -- Remnant Fellowship founder Gwen Shamblin Lara, her husband Joe Lara and five other church leaders -- are presumed dead, authorities said.

Multiple agencies continued operations through the night to recover wreckage, according to a Sunday morning update from Rutherford County officials.

Dive teams from Rutherford County Fire Rescue, Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management, Metro Nashville Police Department, and Wilson County Emergency Management Agency will be conducting dive operations in recovery efforts throughout the day.

The lead investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to be on site midday to join local officials and Federal Aviation Administration representatives already on site, the announcement said.

According to ATC records, the jet with the tail number N66BK took off to the northwest from the Smyrna-Rutherford County Airport at 10:53 a.m. Saturday.

The aircraft climbed to 2,900 feet as it began turning to the northeast.

An air traffic controller gave the pilot directions to turn to the southeast.

When the pilot acknowledged the directions, there is the sound of some sort of alarm in the cockpit.

Ninety seconds into the flight, the jet drops to 2,600 feet, then 2,500 feet, before plummeting to 1,900 feet in just six seconds.

Tracking records show the pilot apparently pulled the plane back up to 2,900 feet just nine seconds later, then the aircraft went into a steep dive into Percy Priest Lake.

When the aircraft dropped off radar, the air traffic controller began repeatedly calling out to the pilot, asking: "How do you hear?"

There was no response.

The aircraft had been registered to JL&GL Productions LP on March 2nd, 2020, Federal Aviation Administration records show. That is a partnership belonging to Joe Lara and Gwen Shamblin Lara.

Joe Lara was certified as a commercial pilot just nine days later, FAA records reveal.

In addition to recovering victims, investigators will be attempting to recover plane debris that may offer clues about what caused the crash.

“With dive teams in the water, we are strongly urging civilian boaters to stay away from the public safety boats,” said Rutherford County incident commander John Ingle. “This is for their safety and the safety of our personnel in the water.”

Ingle also noted that the Lamar Hill boat ramp and Fate Sanders Recreation area are closed until further notice.

“Recovery efforts are ongoing on the lake from the Weakley Lane bridge to the Lamar Hill Boat Ramp,” said Ingle. “We are asking all civilian boaters to stay clear of those areas.”

Weather overcast at 1300 feet so mostly likely India Mike when whatever happened, caused the pilot to finally lose control.

I was apt to wonder about runaway trim in this accident. It has happened before... The rapid altitude excursions point to some form of control issue in any case.

A brief mention of this was made on this evening's TV News here in South Oz. It was mentioned that the Pilot was 'not qualified to fly the aircraft...'

Not that I believe every or anything I hear on News reports but it makes for interesting conjecture... :-?

Scuttlebutt, so take with a pinch of salt at this stage, but, apropos Pinky's post ref. Oz News, I am also reading...
According to the Federal Aviation Administration website, no one on that flight was qualified to fly the plane. Joe Lara, 58, had a pilot's license, but had not updated his medical certification since 2017.

Brandon Hannah, another church leader with a pilot license, was on the flight, but he didn't have a certification for the Cessna 500 series, according to the FAA database.
They took off straight into cloud at 1300 feet!

The "alarm noise" may be the sound of the engine igniters (continuous), interfering with the comms.

Preliminary report out. Doesn't reveal much more than we already know.
Think about some of the performance numbers you use to operate your aircraft—climb or descent rates, airspeeds, and so on. In a jet, most of those numbers normally increase, significantly. In a Cessna 172, a descent rate of 3,100 fpm would be frightening to anyone on board, not to mention the nose down angle required for that rate would probably rip parts from the fuselage. But in a jet, a descent rate of 3,100 fpm would be quick, but not all that unusual if the PIC received an “increase your rate of descent” request from ATC. Now, imagine an unplanned descent rate of 31,000 fpm, a 10-fold increase. The airplane’s nose would be pointed nearly straight down, but not for long before this jet would also begin shedding parts.

That 31,000-fpm descent rate is one of the last pieces of usable radar data the Nashville TRACON’s radar recorded from N66BK, a Cessna Citation 501, before it crashed into Lake Percy Priest about 3 nm northeast of the Smyrna, Tennessee, airport (KMQY) on May 29, 2021. What facts are known were released last week in the NTSB’s preliminary report of the accident. The aircraft left KMQY on an IFR flight plan headed to West Palm Beach, Florida, and crashed less than three minutes after departure, claiming the lives of the pilot and all six passengers aboard. While legal to pilot the jet, the pilot had minimal experience with the airplane and apparently with flying in the IFR system.

“The airplane departed at 1053:06 and made a climbing right turn to the east,” according to the NTSB report. “The pilot was instructed to contact Nashville departure control. At 1054:27, when the airplane was about 3 miles north of the airport, a departure controller contacted the airplane and asked if they were ‘on frequency.’ The pilot responded with, ‘N66BK with you.’ The controller instructed the pilot to turn right to a heading 130 degrees; however, the pilot did not acknowledge. At 1054:46, the controller asked the pilot if he ‘copied’ the heading instruction. The pilot responded about four seconds later and said, ’130…Bravo Kilo.’ At 1055:11, the controller instructed the pilot to climb and maintain 15,000 ft but there was no response.” The controller then made multiple unsuccessful attempts to re-establish communications with the airplane.

“A review of radar data revealed that after the pilot established contact with departure control the airplane made a series of heading changes along with several climbs and descents before it entered a steep, descending left turn. The last radar return, at 1055:05, indicated the airplane was at an altitude of about 700 ft msl, descending about 31,000 [fpm], on a heading of 090.”

A nearby witness fishing in the lake heard what he thought was a low flying military jet before he saw the Citation impact the lake in a “straight down” nose-first attitude. He did not see any evidence of fire or an explosion. The airplane impacted a shallow section of the lake about 2 to 8 ft deep. After approximately two thirds of the aircraft wreckage was recovered, investigators were able to confirm there was no evidence of an in-flight fire prior to impact.

The Citation was not required to carry a flight data or a cockpit voice recorder, so little in-flight data exists to aid investigators. The NTSB said the commercial multi-engine pilot had logged nearly 1,700 hours and was type rated for the Citation, but had logged only 83 total hours in the accident aircraft. One item out of line was that his second-class medical was expired. Since that automatically reverts to a third class medical certificate, the pilot was legal to operate the jet under Part 91, though he could not exercise any of the privileges of his commercial pilot certificate. It is unknown how much of the pilot’s 83 hours were gained flying in actual IFR conditions.

The final NTSB report will include post-autopsy information about the pilot which may offer some insights into a probable cause. That final report will most likely not be available until 2023.
