Hercules down at Jolo.

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Sun Jul 04, 2021 8:33 am

A military transport aircraft carrying 92 people, mostly troops, has crashed in the southern Philippines.

Seventeen bodies were found at the crash site on Jolo island, but 40 people survived and were taken to a nearby military hospital.

The plane, a C130 Hercules, was trying to land at Jolo airport when it overshot the runway, Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said.

Flames and smoke were seen rising from the wreckage.

The state news agency carried pictures of the crash site showing burning debris in a wooded area close to a number of buildings.

According to Cirium fleets data, the aircraft was 33.4 years old and served with the US Air Force until it was parked in 2016. The aircraft was transferred to the PAF in February as part of a two-aircraft deal.

The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency says the two C-130s were requested in 2019, with the US Air Force responsible for implementing the transfer. The value of the two aircraft is listed as $24 million.

The lost aircraft was among the PAF’s five-strong C-130 fleet.

Jolo is located in the country’s Sulu Archepelago, roughly between the islands of Mindinao and Borneo. Jolo Airport’s single runway (09/27) is 6,053ft long.

The C-130 crash was the second fatal accident for the PAF in recent weeks.

On 23 June, a PAF Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk utility helicopter crashed during a night proficiency flight, killing all six aboard the rotorcraft. The PAF only started receiving S-70is in November 2020 as part of a 16-rotorcraft deal.

Prior to the crash, the PAF had received 11 S-70is.

Some video from MSN
Did he overrun? I had been guessing at a baulked approach in IMC but the weather was clear, with good visibility!

Dunno, I'm mere SLF who reads a lot. The PAF seem to be having a run of bad luck, they lost a Black Hawk last month

Interesting video, TGG - didn't look like a tactical approach which is normally much steeper.

Sometimes too steep, like this pilot who was displaying a Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System approach and who really augured in, sadly killing a number of people.

A reasonably good synopsis of this accident on Wikipedia...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Phil ... te_note-32

It has proved to be the deadliest military aircraft accident in Philippine history.
The military has ruled out the possibility that the crash was caused by an attack against the aircraft. Among the angles being considered are the condition of the aircraft, the runway, if there was a human error, and if the plane was overloaded. An investigating team from the AFP arrived at the crash site on July 5. The aircraft's flight recorder and voice cockpit recorder were both recovered. Both were sent to the United States so that the recorded data from the devices could be retrieved.
There were two vehicles on board as well. I wonder if something transpired to critically affect the weight and balance during the landing.
