Worrying engine fire
Worrying engine fire
A UPS 747-800 out of HK had a No1 engine fire on take-off and returned for an over-weight landing. The real worry here is that the fire could not be extinguished until on the ground.

Interesting. Well managed.
Do all the commentators on Aviation Herald post on TOP?

I guess that poster must be Rob the Knob using a different alias?

"Worrying engine fire!"
Are there any engine fires that aren't worrying?

The one wot doesn't go out after both bottles of extinguishant have been used must be pretty much at the top of that list of worrying engine fires, I'd say.
Max kudos the the crew, of the otherwise Useless Parcel Screwup company, who did an exemplary job of saving the aircraft and themselves and the parcels.
I hope that the recorded data and graphical simulations thereof will become teaching materials to all crews for whatever is to be the rest of the 747s life.

Yeah I get that! Nothing like watching the wing structure start to melt and weaken as the fuel bladders melt and the tanks begin expanding ominously.Undried Plum wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 4:27 pmTheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 4:19 pm"Worrying engine fire!"

More importantly, where is the fuel coming from? There are at least two shut-offs for an engine. I wonder if it was an oil tank leak.
I say, my good fellow - you do understand how jet engines work, don't you?................TGG wrote:Are there any engine fires that aren't worrying?

Re: Worrying engine fire
Yes, they put some bloke called Brayton and his cycle in a tube on the wing and set him on fire. As long as he cycles inside a place called the combustion chamber all is well and hopefully he doesn't lose his goolies in the turbines...Boac wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 4:34 pmMore importantly, where is the fuel coming from? Re: Worrying engine fire
You just wait until Tesla makes aero-engines:
Who's there to pull and twist the handle?
Who **** would still be there to twist the handle the other way when that ploy didn't work?
Definition of Mayday: I require immediate assistance.
Q: Mayday mayday mayday.
A: How can I help you?
Err....

Re: Worrying engine fire
According to AvHerald the fire did not go out until the a/c touched down and it relit when it came to a halt. Has to be oil unless there are leaking hydraulics somewhere.
One post details events:
Started as an 'exceedance' for which the drill was begun but it became a fire.

Here is a tale in the ILAFFT vein, that deals with an Indian Air Force pyromaniac QFI... (maybe it should be in the Ripley's Believe It Or Not).
