RENO, Nev. — A twin-engine jet crash near a golf course in the Lake Tahoe area killed everyone aboard and ignited a wildfire that was quickly contained before it threatened the town of Truckee, California, authorities said Monday.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were aboard the Bombardier CL 600. The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft crashed at 1:18 p.m. on Monday while the pilot was attempting to land at nearby Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

The owner of the aircraft and the flight plan were not immediately made public, although authorities later said it might have come from either Coeur d’Alene, Idaho or Florida.

The CL 600 is a multi-seat business jet with twin engines mounted on the rear fuselage and a distinctive T-shaped tail. The jet can hold as many as 14 passengers and two crew.

Nevada County officials couldn’t confirm Monday the number of people on the plane.

Nobody on the ground was hurt as the plane hit a wooded area near the Ponderosa Golf Course, a few blocks from the airport.

Nevada County Coroner Shannan Moon said it was fortunate that the plane didn’t hit any homes.

An FAA statement said the agency and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

I found that CVR etc very confusing! Is it clear what the crew composition was? IE why the 'high-timer' in the RHS?

The mention of the Swiss cheese made me think this one seemed more like an inverse model, where the holes were actually cheese and where there should be cheese there were holes.

I think people are assuming, and the NTSB and the system as a whole would like you to think, that the 'Captain' is a professional who makes his living as a pilot.
And that this is therefore an unfortunate accident.

Total speculation:

Millionaire in the LHS, coming back with his mates on a Monday from a fishing trip in Idaho.
They are giving a lift to two other rich guys they met in the bar the night before.
Millionaire has all the quals, but isn't much of a pilot and everyone in the system lets this slide because he pays well.
Might also be because he's a top lawyer, or knows a few, and they don't want the hassle of the lawsuits if they fail him.
And he always has to be called 'Captain'.
Co-pilots are hired to let him play with the controls, and 'help' where necessary.
They are well remunerated and picked for their diplomatic skills as well as their flying skills.
They are often new to the 'Captain' because after a few trips there's always a scary incident because the 'Captain' isn't listening - he didn't get to be a millionaire by listening to minions - and that co- refuses to fly with that 'Captain' again.

The accident happens because the Captain hasn't registered that the spoilers are out, and the stall is too low for the experienced co- to recover it.

They opt for the circling approach because repositioning for a straight-in to 11 will take longer, and one of the rich guys has just announced that he would be late for a business meeting / his daughter's birthday / his mistress / etc if they did.

As I say, total speculation, not based on my personal experience at all - Oh, no.
