Light aircraft emergency landing, Orkney

#1 Post by ricardian » Fri Dec 17, 2021 6:47 pm

Report on BBC Radio Orkney's Facebook page just now. It's a bit light on detail!
A pilot is being praised for his skill after he escaped injury during an emergency landing on farmland near Kirkwall this afternoon. Police say the pilot's experience helped him bring his light aircraft down safely in a field by Wideford Hill shortly after 2 o'clock. The plane, which had taken off from Lambholm, is thought to be only lightly damaged. Air accident investigators will now look in to what caused the forced landing.

More details.
"Only lightly damaged" - con-rod had gone through the side of the engine!

I assume they meant "the wings and tail are still attached". Putting a new engine in the thing is presumably trivial for a journalist.
