Emirates fly with a hole.
Seems that there was a loud bang on the A380 after T/O. It is not clear how long after T/O. Crew assumed that it was a blown tyre. They carried on for 14 hrs. Don't think that it was a very sensible decision. I would wager my next Sunday lunch as to the nationality of the Captain.
Surely on an A380 there are tyre temperature sensors?

I haven't followed this in detail but I think AH has mention of a possible tyre damage on take-off (a bolt?) so I don't think this is temperature related.
However, like you, I might not have continued!

Just a flesh wound, right. I presume they'll tape over it until it heals....

Once had a tow bar snap pushing us onto the Royal Pavilion stand at LHR. A very small puncture to the nose cone. A BA engineer drilled it out put in a bolt two washers and a nut. Even a dab of paint over the repair. We reported it to command. Some head spanner AVM said that we were not to move until he had inspected it. He arrived at LHR with screeching tyres just in time to see us take off.

I assume that was just in the fairing, not the pressure hull. Might have been a bit noisy otherwise (more so than the turbulence caused by the damage). I wonder what it did for the fuel economy?

Probably not a huge penalty since they reach their destination with enough fuel

Ah yes but did they? Airlines load flight plan fuel. Did he have the planned reserves on arrival? It was a 14 hr flight and something affecting the streamlining of the aircraft will have increased the fuel burn. Just sticking your hand out of the window will increase the fuel burn a tad.Rwy in Sight wrote: ↑Fri Jul 08, 2022 7:03 amProbably not a huge penalty since they reach their destination with enough fuel

Wouldn't do too much good to your hand, either...Ex-Ascot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 08, 2022 10:19 amAh yes but did they? Airlines load flight plan fuel. Did he have the planned reserves on arrival? For a few seconds and may require a wash down afterwardsEx-Ascot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 08, 2022 10:19 amAh yes but did they? Airlines load flight plan fuel. Did he have the planned reserves on arrival? On the Varsity we would pass numerous slips of paper forward to the pilots, procedural airways crossing requests (do procedurals still exist?), practice PATASANIEs etc.
They used to crack the window open, worked like a shredder.

Re: Emirates fly with a hole.
I am probably wrong but they didn't declare a fuel emergency upon arrival at their destination, so the penalty wasn't too greatEx-Ascot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 08, 2022 10:19 amAh yes but did they? Re: Emirates fly with a hole.
I would guess that any increased fuel burn would be well within the contingency figure.

On the JP we used to open the canopy and cup our hand into the 250 (?) knot airflow. Just like feeling a firm breast.
