There is the classic French radio message that
"Zee airfield is out in fog, I cannot land from Zee ILS, it is below minimums and I cannot divert - I 'av to deetch"
whereupon a classy English voice says
"I say, old chap. would it not be better to crash on an airfield where you might get help - fly zee ILS to zero"

He did, it worked.
