It would probably be cheaper just to throw a few thousand dollars at each of the passengers in compensation.
That isn't sympathetic to passengers who might have lost treasured items.

I know, I was just thinking how calculating the airline were in the first place.

......... so 24 years after retirement it will go.
Correct 1983 + 24 = 2007. Got a bit more 'cos they allowed 5 years from the start of the new regime. "To get used to it".

When we moved to NZ - for a variety of reasons, BA still flew here, so I made a few trips back to UK with them and when they pulled out of NZ services Air NZ permitted BA staff to use their S.T. allowances, but not now, all " Interline Agreements" between the two have gone even if I still qualified with B.A.

Glad Willie Walsh, the cause of my disenfranchment, gets S.T. for life in his retirement, plus a few million quid "bonus". (My comments removed before Admin 2 does !!)

As Woody says can they take two loads of bags on the next flight? Doubt it.

One year in the planning. How many times did they run a flight plan to see if it could be done with a full load? This time it couldn't and it was just the first flight. They may never catch up with luggage left behind.

What 'low-cost' alternative transport (assuming air) could they employ?
Assume no cabin crew needed (apart from flight-deck, obviously).

Don't suppose a drone would have the capacity and the duration (but I could be wrong when you consider current military drones).

Usually on a wide bodied jet there is plenty of spare cargo 'space'. They could chuck it on another airline who does two stages. We probably used to make more out of flying newspapers tabloids out for the brain dead of the UK to read on the beach than from the brain dead themselves.

It really is incredibly simple. They need to 'adjust' the passenger load (obviously with their baggage) so that the string will reach. The only snag I can think of is something called 'profit'.

Boac I think that they are working on a best scenario schedule. They need to be more realistic and as you say reduce the planned load. Perhaps on the day they could load some standbys.

Some the passengers were interviewed on TV as they emerged from Immigration etc. They were definitely not amused and as Woody says where do you put the missing bags? There was a vague promise of sending them on 'when they could'.

Re-plan with lower payload and add standby pax if headwinds less strong? I wonder what their baggage allowance is on that sector.

They are going to put some of those plastic coffin things on the roof for the extra baggage..

They'll probably put it all in a container or two and send it by sea. Except it'll probably be a couple of months before it gets on a ship and then will take another couple more before it arrives.

FR24 satellite tracking shows a sudden turn towards Nadi a few minutes ago?! Maybe only just told the pax even though an earlier decision was taken? A change in the ETA in the two screenshots from 0845 to 0932.....

I don't have a suitable map on hand but from that position Nandi may be closer than Orkland but I wonder by how much?
