The U.S. Coast Guard found small parts of a helicopter that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico Thursday morning about 10 miles off the mouth of the Mississippi River's Southwest Pass, but had still not located the four people who were aboard.

One passenger was identified by his wife, Lacy Scarborough, as David Scarborough, 36, an offshore oil worker who was returning after a two-week shift, according to the Sun Herald of Biloxi. They are residents of Lizana, Mississippi, northwest of Biloxi, and are expecting a baby soon, the paper reported.

His wife says Scarborough is an offshore worker and one of four people missing from a helicopter that crashed Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, in the Gulf of Mexico about 10 miles from Southwest Pass, one of the main shipping channels near the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The identity of the pilot and other passengers were not released.

The helicopter was supposed to be heading to shore from an oil platform owned by Walter Oil & Gas Co., and it crashed into the water just after taking off, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Jose Hernandez. He said the Coast Guard was notified of the accident at 8:40 a.m. Thursday.

The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from New Orleans and a small boat from its Venice station on Thursday morning to search for the helicopter and missing people in the Gulf near the Walter platform, Hernandez said.

Walter Oil, which has its corporate offices in Houston, did not immediately respond to a request for additional information about the accident.

Hernandez said the helicopter was owned by Rotorcraft Leasing Co., based in Broussard.

On Dec. 15, another of Rotorcraft's helicopters crashed about 30 miles offshore of Terrebonne Bay, and all three people aboard were rescued by the Coast Guard, with only minor injuries reported.

Rotorcraft did not immediately respond to requests for more information about Thursday's accident.

Any idea what type of helicopter it is/was, pp? The photo of Mr Scarborough seems to show him standing in front of a Jetranger.

Lack of power may have caused it to drop and bounce off the deck as it transitioned but no doubt the FAA will issue a bulletin before long. I can't believe that single engined machines are still allowed in the GOM.

The bodies four people killed in a helicopter crash near New Orleans last week have been recovered, company officials said Tuesday.

The craft, carrying a pilot and three passengers, came down at 8:40 a.m. Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico after picking up workers from a platform operated by Houston-based Walter Oil & Gas, officials said.

In a joint statement issued by three companies, it was announced “that the remains of all four occupants in the aircraft involved in the event” Thursday “in the West Delta area, have been recovered.”

The joint statement was issued by Walter Oil & Gas, the chopper's operator Rotorcraft Leasing Co. and the workers' employers Island Operating Company.

The companies declined to name the victims who were aboard the the Bell 407 helicopter that crashed about 10 miles from the shipping channel Southwest Pass, at the mouth of the Mississippi River southeast of New Orleans, officials said. The NTSB is investigating.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the pilot and passengers on board the aircraft," according to the joint statement by the three companies.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with the agencies investigating this tragic incident including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement."
