Accident: Lufthansa A333 near Washington on Mar 1st 2023, turbulence causes injuries
By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Mar 2nd 2023 16:35Z, last updated Thursday, Mar 2nd 2023 16:35Z

A Lufthansa Airbus A330-300, registration D-AIKK performing flight LH-469 from Austin,TX (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL370 about 150nm northwest of Washington,DC (USA) when the aircraft encountered brief but severe turbulence in clear air causing injuries to a number of people on board. The crew decided to divert to Washington Dulles, where the aircraft landed on runway 19C without further incident about one hour after leaving FL370.

Dulles Airport reported seven people were transported to hospitals.

The airline reported the aircraft encountered brief but severe clear air turbulence about 90 minutes into the flight, flight attendants provided first aid to injured passengers and the aircraft diverted to Washington.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Washington about 14 hours after landing.

Matthew McConaughey and his wife were on board the Lufthansa flight that sent 7 to the hospital after plummeting thousands of feet in severe turbulence ... and she's detailing their frightening experience.

Camila Alves McConaughey shared a pic of the damage aboard Lufthansa's flight 469 after pilots were forced to make an emergency landing Wednesday in Washington D.C. -- they'd taken off from Austin, TX bound for Germany before the turbulence and drastic drop in altitude.

Camila's photo shows the cabin in complete disarray, with food and cloth all over the place. She says she was told the aircraft dropped almost 4K feet, adding "everything was flying everywhere."

She also posted an update on their rescheduled flight, which got off to a troubling start -- the pilot told them they'd be in 45 minutes of turbulence while flying outta D.C. ... which had to trigger some PTSD for passengers on the previous flight.

The airline's Airbus A330 made headlines when the turbulence struck over Tennessee ... and at least one passenger was sure they were going to die.

Looks like the end of a Dan Air TFS to me.

What are the statistics for injuries to the pilots due to turbulence - or do they always buckle-up?

Regs require seatbelts and shoulder harnesses for T/O and landing and seatbelts at all other times when seated.
5 point harnesses on every transport category aircraft that I have flown or been on the flight deck.
Fortunately, have never tested their efficacy. #:-S
Edited to add:
Probably more danger from flying clipboards, metal A/C logbook containers, plates and trays from meal service, etc.
Remembering from small aircraft days, cuts and bruises from metal logbook container and a holed rear window from an unsecured bottle jack in the aft baggage compartment. Not me #:-S , my company.
