SAN DIEGO — A search is underway off the coast of San Diego after a jet carrying three people crashed near San Clemente Island, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.
The Coast Guard was notified shortly after 7:50 a.m. by the air traffic control tower on San Clemente Island that a plane may have crashed about one mile southwest of the island, which is about 80 miles off the coast of San Diego, said Coast Guard spokesperson Levi Read.

For the record:

2:08 p.m. May 10, 2023 The Coast Guard initially reported the name of a company it said operated the plane, but that information was incorrect.

A debris field was subsequently located by Customs and Border Protection personnel who responded to the emergency call.

The Coast Guard launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from San Diego to respond to the site. Navy units in the area also responded, Read said.

Read said the aircraft is a Phoenix Air Learjet and reportedly was carrying three people on board, all civilians. Personnel on San Clemente Island reported the aircraft “didn’t make it back to the runway” after reporting an emergency aboard the plane, a Coast Guard statement said.

“We have found a debris field. There’s an ongoing search with Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Customs and Border Protection,” Read said.

No other information was immediately available.

San Clemente Island is just past Catalina Island. I used to fly to Catalina frequenty when i flew for IEX Helicopters. I also sail there to this day.

San Clemente is a firing range, I suspect the Lear jet has something to do with the military operations that take place there. Note the "warning' at the bottom of the pic here:

Coast Guard suspends search for 3 people after aircraft crashed off California coast
Coast Guard officials said the Phoenix Learjet was a civilian aircraft contracted by the U.S. Navy and had taken off from Point Mugu Wednesday morning.

Officials suspended an over 24-hour search Thursday for three people in an aircraft that crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the southern California coast has been suspended.

No individuals were recovered in the search and the people on board have not been identified.

The initial report of a downed Phoenix Learjet came in just before 8 a.m. local time Wednesday from the Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility on San Clemente Island, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The island is owned by the U.S. Navy and is located about 80 miles west of San Diego.

The facility reported “an aircraft emergency” aboard the plane, noting that the aircraft didn’t make it back to the runway.

A U.S. Navy Phoenix Lear jet was in the area and immediately began searching for the debris field.

The debris field was located one mile southwest of the island, and search efforts were underway Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard of Southern California tweeted.

Levi Reed, a spokesperson with the U.S. Coast Guard, said the search was suspended around 9 a.m. Thursday. The search covered 334 square miles and involved multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the Air Force and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The jet was a civilian aircraft that was contracted by the U.S. Navy with civilian personnel aboard, Reed said.

It took off from Point Mugu, part of the Naval Base in Ventura County, but it’s not clear where it was going, he said.

The cause of the crash is unclear. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating.
