Embraer down near Moscow.

#1 Post by OneHungLow » Wed Aug 23, 2023 5:57 pm

Ten people have been killed in a private jet crash north of Moscow - with the Russian Civil Aviation Authority saying Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list.

Seven passengers and three crew were on board the Embraer aircraft, which was en route from Moscow to St Petersburg, TASS news agency reported.

The jet crashed near the village of Kuzhenkino Tver region, 60 miles north of Moscow, according to Russia's emergency situations ministry.

Multiple videos circulating on social media appear to show the jet crashing.

"An investigation has been launched into the Embraer plane crash that occurred tonight in the Tver region. According to the passenger list, among them is the name and surname of Yevgeny Prigozhin," Rosaviatsia said.

Unconfirmed media reports suggest the business jet belonged to Prigozhin, but it was not immediately clear if he had boarded the flight.

Equivalent to the usual Russian political defenestration I suspect.

The Russians are always very fussy about passenger lists, even on private jets, as I know only too well. Remember that every Russian has an 'internal passport' that they have to carry with them at all times, and even if Prigozhin didn't have one, the others would have. That said, it could have been a bit of 'maskirovka' and the Prig might have been on the second plane that departed and turned back. Only time will tell. Popcorn duly ordered...

ETA that Wagner have now officially confirmed that both he and his No.2 were on the flight.

'tis his own aircraft, so they knew the risks. He probably chucked a gold bar at them after each flight. (When Somoza was running Nicaragua, he used to give the pilots of his 125 a briefcase full of dollars after the 'more difficult' flights).

BBC currently claiming that Wagner are saying that Prigozhin is dead, although they also note that 8 bodies have been recovered fro the crash site. Perhaps he's conveniently disappeared?

BBC is reporting this:
Citing unnamed Belarusian sources, Ukraine's National Resistance Center is saying that some Wagner convoys appear to be heading towards Russia.

"The convoys are probably heading in the direction of the border with Russia, but the Belarusian special forces are trying to prevent their vehicles from leaving," it said in an update on Wednesday, hours after after the plane crash that is presumed to have killed Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The BBC is not able to independently verify this.
That could be interesting if true. I think it unlikely that they're all heading back to join the Russian armed forces. Possibly one thing that Putin didn't think would happen, because this time he's got no one to make a deal with, and even if there was, I don't think they'd be willing to talk.

In the original video, the woman is in or near the garden, hears a bang, and looks up to the sky, to see the aircraft plummeting towards the ground. She seems shocked when it hits the ground and explodes, but I imagine she probably lives in a small village and doesn't see much life.

Did so. If you look closely at the aircraft as it tumbles, you will note one of the windows is open. :-h
