Plane crash in Brazil's Amazon state leaves 14 dead

SAO PAULO, Sept 16 (Reuters) - A plane crash in Brazil's northern Amazon state on Saturday has left 14 dead, the state's governor said.
The accident took place in the Barcelos province, some 400 km (248 miles) from the state capital, Manaus.
"I deeply regret the death of the 12 passengers and two crew members who were victims of the plane crash in Barcelos on Saturday," said Wilson Lima, Governor of Amazonas state on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Our teams have been working from the outset to provide the necessary support. My sympathy and prayers go out to their families and friends."
The Manaus Aerotaxi airline issued a statement confirming that there had been an accident and that it was investigating but offering no details about deaths or injuries.
"We count on respect for the privacy of those involved at this difficult time and will be available to provide all necessary information and updates as the investigation progresses," the statement said.
Some Brazilian media outlets reported that U.S. citizens were among those killed. Reuters was unable to confirm those reports.

Horrifying reports are coming in from Brazil of a plane that has crashed killing all 14 passengers on board. It was said to have been transporting American tourists to the Barcelos region in Amazonas.
Brazilian online newspaper Metrópoles reports there are US tourists among the 14 victims of the crash today - and all passengers on board died.
The secretary of the Civil Defense of the state of Amazonas, which contains the Amazon rainforest, confirmed the tragedy to reporters and said a response team has been dispatched.

A spokesperson for Barcelos city hall said 12 of those on board were passengers, while the pilot and co-pilot also perished in the horror crash. The tragedy is believed to have occurred when the plane was landing, and amid very heavy rain.
The plane crashed in the afternoon local time and was transporting passengers including American tourists to the Barcelos region in Amazonas.
It was described as an air taxi-style plane.

And on Sunday morning, a Brazilian Air Force aircraft is set to arrive in Barcelos to transport the bodies back to their families.
A crisis office has been established by the government of Amazonas to deal with the fallout from the tragedy and a Civil Defense team has arrived in Barcelos to help.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian Air Force is also helping to investigate the accident and will try to work out how it happened.
The heavy rain in the area has cut off electricity for parts of the city and made communication difficult, the governor's office said.
