Russians in Afrika - IL-76 crash in Mali

#1 Post by Fox3WheresMyBanana » Fri Sep 29, 2023 11:44 am

23 Sep.
Can a Candid stop in the last 2,200' (my estimate*) of an 8,000 ft runway?

"I dunno Ivan, let's have a go. Hold my vodka and watch this!"

The aircraft was reportedly full of Wagner mercenaries.

*I'm assuming the tail of the other aircraft (FAF A400 Atlas?) seen at touchdown (0:08) is in the SE corner slot of the central parking apron, and the structure immediately above the landing aircraft is this airfield gate (note the other gate to the east, left in the video):

I'll take a guess that the videographer was atop one of the fuel tanks to the west of the central apron.

A bit more info plus video - I cannot see spoilers and cannot be certain reversers were deployed.

I'm pretty sure thrust reversers are deployed at 0:10
It's most obvious on the #1 and #4 engines, and from this video it would appear deploying only the outboard T/Rs is normal

No spoilers are visible on this landing.

There appears to be a slight squatting on the crash video around 0:12 which may be wheelbrakes being applied also.

However, it seems that only the pilots were retarded ;)))

I gather that this was a 'training flight', but this being Africa, there were 'passengers' on board. I suspect that this was a point-to-point flight in which they offset the costs (ie pocketed the fares). They were apparently training (not very successfully it would seem), some Malian pilots. The IL-76, as I understand it from those who have flown it, is quite a forgiving beast, so they must really have cocked it up big time to end up in this mess.

All airlines, including BA, 'train' with 'passengers' on board. Sometimes 20 sectors or more during line training. It is normal. This flight was not quite so.....

First day as an A320 pilot. :D
First leg PM.
Second leg PF LAS-BWI. First approach and landing in the plane 200' and 1/2 mile. Right at CAT 1 mins. Piece of cake. Just like training. :YMAPPLAUSE: :-bd
Day 2 PF BWI- PHX, WX clear and a million. Visual approach...All asshole and elbows. ~X( :((
Never recall doing a full visual approach in the sim.

Indeed. A different standard and ethos of training altogether, methinks!
