This is a weird one, and there must be questions on 'mental states' here. One suggestion I have heard is that they 'expected' to take off the other way, where the distance would have been fine, but there is a huge ? over why did they go the other way! Much more to come here. All pax and cabin crew were extremely lucky, to put it mildly.

Unfortunately, not so for the aircraft.

No, it has been proved fairly conclusively that if you fly an aircraft through a group of poles some damage will occur. =)) Fortunately the aircraft is not human, however.

Fox - what is your point about 'the lighting'?

I understand that the damage to the lighting and ancillary equipment has meant that the approach aids have now been downgraded from CAT III to CAT I, so the lights have had their revenge :)

Ah! I was a bit slow on the uptake there, Fox. Sorry!

The antics in TOP on this accident show exactly why we all left! I have, however, been provided with a Google translation of the initial report into the accident.
