The hits just keep coming for United and Boeing. :))

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Mar 8th 2024 16:36Z, last updated Friday, Mar 8th 2024 16:37Z

A United Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration N27290 performing flight UA-2477 from Memphis,TN to Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA) with 160 crew and 6 crew, landed on Houston's runway 27 and slowed to taxi speed (about 30 knots) prior to attempting to turn right off onto the last taxiway, however, skidded and went straight after turning about 45 degrees and came to a stop on soft ground off the runway at 07:58L (13:58Z) with the left main gear collapsed.

A passenger reported the aircraft had landed normally and in normal attitude, when the crew attempted to turn off the aircraft was too fast, skidded, the gear collapsed and the aircraft went off onto soft ground. The passenger disembarked onto the runway via stairs.

The FAA stated: "After landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, United Airlines Flight 2477 rolled onto the grass when exiting onto the taxiway around 8 a.m. local time on Friday, March 8. The passengers deplaned on the taxiway and were bused to the terminal. The Boeing 737 departed from Memphis International Airport. Please contact the airline for additional information. The FAA will investigate. "

I wouldn't necessarily blame this one on Boeing. Any aircraft at speed hitting soft ground like that would probably do nasty things to the gear.

I guess if they skidded due to brakes locking up or other mechanical thing then yes, it's back on Boeing.

Just the fact that it was a Boeing product brings out bad PR.
Same thing with the United B777 that lost a MLG wheel at SFO. That wheel would have been changed probably several dozen times over the aircraft's 22 years in service.

They didn't just 'slip off the taxiway, they missed it by a (US) mile :)) .

Whatever was in his/her mind trying to take a 90 at 30kts? Heaven help us. Not just untied - more like unravelled!

Just wondering - is the speed of the a/c on the ground taken from the pitot? In the video above the speed was mentioned as 58 knots and then 30 knots as if the readings came too close together for the difference to be caused by braking, leading me to wonder if it was caused by wind gusting.

I assume they were taken from FR24 and thus will be GPS derived I believe. Looking at the METARS there is no way................. =)) Even Untied would be pushed to blame an icy surface............ :))

I was looking at the map in Juan's video, and would have thought it would make more sense to take the high-speed taxiway immediately preceding the end - at least that way they could have existed safely at speed and then slowed down. And if they'd still screwed up the subsequent sharper turn, at least it wouldn't be blocking the runway.
