JFK Up-cock

#1 Post by Boac » Sun Apr 21, 2024 9:36 am

Came up on 'Airlive', but looking deeper.......................... https://www.paddleyourownkanoo.com/2024 ... to-takeoff

As far as I can tell (unbelievably!) JFK operate two frequencies for a particular runway, ground and tower. Not a problem in theory as long as the two controllers communicate and co-ordinate with each other which clearly did not happen! It appears that ground cleared 4 aircraft to all cross an active runway at the same time while tower cleared a Swissair Airbus to take off on that runway. Fortunately Swissair spotted the mistake and stopped its takeoff.

Appalling ATC. "'Hold short at XXX and contact tower" surely if they cannot work it properly?

Extra good animation (for a layman as well).
And the "the calm and collected Swiss pilot", super.

AvHerald has it now. Not long for Juan to chip in. It really is time the US learnt how to do ATC safely. That's two gross aerodrome ground control errors in 2 days, this one and Washington giving two aborts due to blocked runways. Time for the firing squad?

Kennedy Steve’s gone so this is what happens now.
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".

Just over a year ago there was a near miss on the runway at JFK. It was at night, Delta (B737) was cleared to take off but an American Airlines B777 crossed that active runway. They had lost SA during the taxi. Fortunately, the Southwest crew aborted the take off before collision. Similar set of circumstances but some key differences.
It looks like the lessons weren't learned.
