Congratulations to om15 who ended the last thread in thrilling fashion.

"Off down the coast tomorrow, apparently the roads are going to melt."

I am watching the television. Nothing in particular is of interest to me so I may go and finish the Daily Torygraph off until the news is on. :-h
All generalisations are false, including this one.

Lunched on my very first homegrown tomato!

Not a big lunch, admittedly, but things should get better by the time the seasons make me hungry again.

I watched Mr Woop's engine vid for 10 minutes and nodded off but slumbered only for a half hour.
I shall take that as a compliment Slasher as well as encouragement to try harder, I'm obviously not being quite boring enough to induce a full nights sleep, though a half hour nap is a good start.

Good evening. Feels like 30 right now. #:-S Surprised the paper boy early this morning as I weeded the front border before it got too hot. Apparently I'm not the only person he's seen gardening at dawn. :D Had intended to do more after dinner but it's too hot and fatiguing.

Saw doc this morning who was pleased with progress - splodges lesions, are healing up nicely and now less infectious. Still not sleeping because of chest pains.

Good to hear Jaffa is back on form and keeping his staff on their toes. Has he taken to the cool mat?

Excellent news about the books Ex-A.

I bet the tomato was all the sweeter for being the first Mr Fox. It reminds me of cropping my first (and only) home grown asparagus spear. I solemnly steamed it and then ate it with a dab of butter. Delish.

This could go into the rant thread, but I've started, so...
Saturday, a friend arrived with a dressing-table drawer knob: broken screw protruding, rest of broken screw in her other hand. 'Jim, could you possibly try...?'
Unfortunately the screw was too slim to be drilled and screw-extracted, and too firmly rusted in to come out with pliers/pincers etc. So friend was told it would have to be six new ones (unless I could find an exact match for the 35-year-old broken one - which of course I couldn't)
So today was spent, in and around other stuff, staining six new knobs to match the rest of her bedroom furniture, and cutting down the supplied machine screws since the thick metal trim panel could not be used this time.
Then this evening, 'But Jim, we need the trim, because there's a circular mark where it came off.'

ERAAAAAAAAAAAargh! and likewise pee poo belly bum drawers.

Rain Sillyness - an explanation

#10 Post by Wodrick » Mon Jul 23, 2018 10:48 pm

I carry this over to bore a new audience.

An entry for the boring category.
As I, regrettably, have no weather station I look at the four nearest for a start date. This year their recorded last day of rain was;
1. May 1st 4.3 mm
2. May 2nd 3 mm
3. May 6th 0.3 mm
4. May 4th 0.8 mm
I think I took May 4th as a starting date. If any of these 4 record measurable rain or if I have a noticeable fall then the count stops.

I have checked the most days I have recorded and it's not 183 but 177. from 21 April 2014 7.4mm to 14 October 3.1mm.
This year, unless there is some strange, or more strangerer weather I think we can expect somewhere in the 120 day area, depends when it starts in September.

Still awake ?

Given up trying to sleep as it just isn't happening.
Pitch black out there as the moon has gone to see what its like below the horizon.
It's still 18C which doesn't help things.

It's a bit early to ambush paper boys but the milkman usually delivers about now.
It wouldn't be the first time we've scared the bejeebers out of each other as I've ventured out to the bins.

Good morning. It's a refreshing 17C and pleasant to work in the shade. Crept outside after paper delivered and before neighbours were awake to tell me off for gardening whilst ill. Ha! Having breakfast now before returning to bed.

Dreadful news from Greece: wildfires have killed over 50 people so far and destroyed several villages and resorts near Athens. Other countries are sending fire fighters and equipment to assist Greek crews. I hope your family and friends are safe RiS.

I got my "sleep" in from 6 until 8:30 today after a troubled night. It sounds like TB is playing the same sort of game.

I've just returned from the Coop and am of the considered opinion that today will be another scorchio. Quite pleasant at
the moment though.

Agreed about the dreadful news from Athens.

Morning all,
Normal, deep in sea mist at present which has rolled in in the last hour or so.
The guess is for 33c today which is 11 higher than yesterday. About normal for the time of year.

Today's excitement is for a man to try Reiki on Slinky today, 2nd try, we felt the last made her worse, one more go.
SM has Pilates
Then the Hornet exterminator cometh.

Leg cramps

#20 Post by Capetonian » Tue Jul 24, 2018 9:09 am

Someone sent me this the other day and I thought it worth posting, specifically with reference to leg cramps, which I sometimes suffer from. There does not seem to be any particular causative factor. Yesterday for example I walked about 15 km in extreme heat, uphill, downhill, and on the flat, and had really painful cramps during the night, but sometimes it will happen after a few days of no exercise at all. I am reasonably fit, not overweight, never smoked, and take care to keep well hydrated.

BE aware that heart attacks can be triggered by dehydration.

Good Thing To Know. From The Mayo Clinic. How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night?

Heart Attack and Water - Drinking one glass of water before going to bed avoids stroke or heart attack. Interesting.......

Something else I didn't know .... I asked my Doctor why people need to urinate so much at night time

Answer from my Cardiac Doctor: Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc.) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.

Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist.

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs

1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion

1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure

1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Mayo Clinic on Aspirin - Dr. Virend Somers is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic who is the lead author of the report in the July 29, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.

1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night.

The Reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would be strongest in your system.

2. Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest – years! (When it gets old, it smells like vinegar).

Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know. Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue. They work much faster than the tablets.

Why keep Aspirin by your bedside?

It's about Heart Attacks - There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.

The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep. If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

Afterwards: - Call emergency services. - Phone a neighbour or a family member who lives very close by. Say "Heart Attack!" - Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins. - Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and ........DO NOT LIE DOWN!

A Cardiologist has stated that if each person after receiving this e-mail, sends it to 10 people, probably one life could be saved!

Do forward this message. It may save lives!
