Well at least it will give the Red's a proper day out, confined as they are here in the UK to performances about twenty miles out to sea while the spectator's watch agog with rusting telescopes, or if, perforce on land then, then limited to a synchronised raising and lowering of undercarriages while a HSE tape is played, warning the spectator's of the dangerous effects of the smoke and the potential for any excitement whatsoever to increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks!

Shoreham has a lot to answer for and it is not just the outrageous landing charge there!

Just have to hope the Trumpet does not think 'Red' is something to do with Russia.............and possibly 'Arrows ' to do with native Americans. :))

I hope they display at the Canadian International Air Show! (Now, who do I know who could get me on to the tarmac at YYZ?)

I usually manage to attend at least one display by the Red Arrows every year, and 2018 has been a good one, since I was at both the Eastbourne and Guernsey airshows. Each of these displays was as spectacular and thrilling as any I've witnessed over the years, both being heightened by the seaside location. Sorry Caco, although I recognise satire when you employ it to make your points, your "about twenty miles out to sea", etc., is well over the top! For me, there has been no detectable loss of the spectator's pleasure in viewing masterly aerobatic performances, due to either the use of marine backdrops, or to tightening of certain rules governing airshows since Shoreham.

If there are to be no Red Arrows during August or September 2019, as rumoured, then that kiboshes the Eastbourne and Guernsey appearances - so I'll just have to go elsewhere!

One of my first airshow experiences was Lightnings arriving at full chat at very low level from behind the crowdline (over the heads of spectators) - Acklington.
My closest was getting soaked by the spray of a hovering Harrier (Sunderland).

G-CPTN, quite, will the Red's US tour have quite the same impact on RAF recruitment or as an advert for British aviation industry?

Great for the players and little else - I had a great 4 week trip to a civvie air show in NZ and it didn't get a line in my home town rag.

Apart from a great, all expenses paid, tour with adoring air show groupies at every display, what is the benefit for RAF or MOD plc?

Before anyone says sour grapes, I have had my (un)fair share of jollies including a long range navigation exercise to New Zealand.

When the Reds came to South Africa, there was no apparent benefit to the RAF.

But the trip was sponsored by BAe and the sponsor sold Hawks to the SAAF.

I am aware that the USN fly's Goshawks, but might there be a commercial reason?

Ian, you may well be right that BAE is sponsoring that tour. As BAE is a major defence contractor even in the US that could be a reason. Personally the Reds are flying what are essentially clapping out early Hawks and should have the new 128 as a show case.

The team are on their way back from Greece having been granted Public Display authorisation on 28th. First display Torbay on 1/6 and appearing at the D-Day events around Portsmouth on 5/6. :-bd
