Re: Automation may not be good for you..
No mention of what was believed to have been the cause in the article, leaving people to think it was a huge aircraft malfunction. Massive EMF pulses out of military radar equipment based on Australia's north west coast are believed to disrupted the computer systems. An Aircraft Crash Investigation episode spoke at some length about the potential cause. There having been two similar incidents in the same area previously.
Wouldn't surprise me to learn that the Septics had been testing non-physical/non-mechanical means to bring down aircraft. Commercial aircraft destroyed in the process would have just been collateral damage.

Couple this "spike" event with hopefully experienced captain out of flight deck briefly for "physiological break" and one of our newbies left behind to mind the shop and there we have another disaster.
Given that a training/experience of new airliner pilots is under scrutiny this is another lonely and ignored elephant in the boardroom.........

I think you mean neglected, but there's a bloody herd of them!

Suspect PN is referring to the word "altitude" in the quote.

I detest anything which tries to remove control from me. That includes spell-checkers, automatic gear boxes, automatic windscreen washers, and a hundred other things we are daily exposed to.

Geez you're clever G Cap. Would never have thought of that.

Same typo which has equipped aircraft over the years with "pilot heaters" to ensure those forward-facing bits of central heating pipe don't freeze up and cause speed indication errors?

Re: Automation may not be good for you..
Just disposed of - to the knackers yard after 25 years ownership - a car that had "auto" headlights. The original dealer told me to put them in Auto, and never touch the switch again, the lights will come on at dusk and go off at dawn - should I be unfortunately still driving at crack of sparrows - he said...........other things we are daily exposed to.
Trouble was .... they didn't come on in daylight fog, or heavy rain, so one had to select the "manual" option.
Trouble was .... If reaching home when still dark the lights extinguished when the ignition was turned off, but if parking with them on in the "manual" mode during the day, which in reality I occasionally did, then the ignition switch didn't extinguish them. I was a fairly regular sight stood at the kerb waving a pair of jump leads to attract some passing, kind, motorist, as there still seems to be a few around ! ( tho. some refused on the grounds that my leads didn't have a "capacitor" or some such gadget built into them to protect their own delicate electronics in their modern cars.)

Always used to say to the cabin supervisor that I had left the F/O to contemplate the solitude of command. Mind you the thing was probably in better hands.

Don'tya just lurve automation everywhere you go?
Brilliant gripping documentary on BBC4 (yeah, them) Sunday 27 May @ 2100 BST titled "Last Breath:Storyville".
Saturation divers on North Sea floor hanging on the end of support ship whose THREE HALs used for dynamic positioning malfunction almost simultaneously and the ship drifts out of control in the surface storm dragging the divers with it.
Horrifying show which may have a read across to all those 'frames relying on HALs for their good behaviour.

They probably all used the same software and all tripped the same bug at the same time. I seem to remember the space shuttle had multiple computers and it was a requirement that one of them be made by someone else, running completely different software written against the same spec, in an attempt to avoid that happening.barkingmad wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2019 8:01 amSaturation divers on North Sea floor hanging on the end of support ship whose THREE HALs used for dynamic positioning malfunction almost simultaneously and the ship drifts out of control in the surface storm dragging the divers with it.
Another example from history was when ATMs ran OS/2 and there was a date-related bug, so they all crashed at the same time as the date rolled over.

And of course when our leaders approve the ultimate demise of cash then when the financial HALs in the western world throw a wobbly how do the peasants and the glorious rich manage to pay for fuel and food?

In our village all the banks bar one closed. The solitary cash machine was at the bank. One night a bunch of tea leaves knicked the ATM and wrecked the bank.
The shops soon ran out of cash as did the customers. It took time but eventually the bank was repaired and closed a couple of months later. The village got 5 new machines.
