Morning folks, frog bloody city. All walkers, did I spell that wrong? Our fault I know but they will not spend any money here. The whole point of promoting walking spring and autumn is to extend the holiday season to increase island income.

A bright morning, with a strong, cool breeze after a cold front went through during the night, perfect for suppressing mossies. I have been out removing more of their habitat at no personal risk of revenge attacks :ymdevil:
Second breakfast awaits!

Not the first time it has been suggested but that will spoil all the fun when they get lost. Mrs Ex-Ascot met a lost frog group yesterday heading in completely the wrong direction. For some unknown reason she pointed them in the right direction.

Getting cool and cloudy. Lunch done, sausage stew and chips. Yet to speak to chef about din dins.

Found that even the denizens of gay Paris speak excellent English as long as you speak some Franglais to them first. Never had a problem, but then I'm a Scot, and they remember the Auld Alliance.

....having travelled a lot in France with my family since the early '70s, having worked with the Aeronavale in France and in this country I have NEVER EVER come across this alledgedly obnoxious behaviour you guys seem to suffer from at every turn. Having stayed in hotels, B&Bs and campsites, I've been fed well made welcome and enjoyed conversations on all sorts of subjects with a wide spectrum of society without any problems. I'm baffled.
Maybe as Magnus suggests it's because I'm a Scot but I don't really believe that can be the whole explanation. But then again I am always curious and interested about how other people live their lives and had the same positive responses from Thailand, Malaysia Spain etc. If one has an open attitude to other cultures the positive responses usually outweigh any effort you have put in.

Rossian, I have great respect for you but we are generally speaking about frogs abroad. There is a very good reason that some years ago the frogs were voted by the WTO as the most hated tourists in the world. I have given reasons before. I despise the Japanese as well for their treatment of our POWs in WWII and refusal to apologise but for the record they were voted the most popular tourists.

It is a case of 'when in Rome'. You do not go through a small Greek village on a remote island with little old ladies in black saying 'bonjour'. Or wearing a bikini. W@nkers the lot of them. Would they wear a bikini in Paris?

Ex-A, I will agree about the bonjour and disagree about the bikini - it is an island after all. Italians, Spaniards and French try to use their language everywhere mainly because they are jealous of English speaking people - who can be understood everywhere.

And to re-restate here I think it is ok for most ladies to walk around wearing just a bikini on their upper body but for a guy doing so more than 20 m from a body of water..

RiS sure get the joke but I am not talking about the port I am talking about our mountain village 30 mins walk.from the beach. This is an extremely traditional and religious island. The older people are offended. The frogs are not respectful.

Raki time. Not a tourist in sight.

Spanish and Catalans really, really hate the French. Arrogant cheapskates they call 'em. And that's just the tourists. Every now and then a fishery protection vessel is sent up to chase the frog fishing vessels back out of Spanish waters. As for the houses built in Spain by French, no planning permission, built at weekends and on public (religious) holidays by French workers paying no tax in Spain...... I see three of these villas from my terrace.

I find a few key words in French (mainly "I am sorry, I cannot speak French, I am Australian" works a treat. :D

Visited France as a Canadian for the first time a couple of years back, and had zero hassles. This was never the case when I was an Englishman. That's not to say I haven't generally enjoyed France and the French people, but there's a certain proportion of them who have a strong .. bias, shall we say .. against certain nations.

Just had another 'bonjour' and dropped a fork full of spaghetti on the floor. F...ing b@stards. I am sure they do it on purpose to me. Maybe something to do with the huge badge I wear with a picture of a frog in a liqudiser. Once said 'ribit' as one walked past and it undersood.

Like ex-A, I despise the Japanese for what they inflicted on SE Asia a while back. Some 50 million dead by some estimates.

We live, at least some of the time, near the city of Davao on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Around 1920, the Japanese owned most of the local plantations and the city was nicknamed 'Little Tokyo'.

Today, we get many Japanese tourists. Without fail they seem to be infitely polite and well behaved. Decent people.

I have had some remarkably pleasant experiences in France, mainly in the north west and south west, and odd as it may seem, in Paris, and experienced kindness and generosity at the hands of French people.

On the other hand, some of the most unpleasant, rude, obnoxious, xenophobic and dishonest people I have met have been French. I suffered having to work with them at different times in my professional career and that is where one really sees their bad qualities, such as treachery, blame passing, back stabbing, falsifying paperwork to suit themselves at the expense of co-workers, and so on. I could also mention disgusting personal hygiene and the morals of alleycats, the women being worse than the men.

I have found that generally those who have chosen to leave the socialism, unionism, and protectionism of France to work in other countries have done well and have a very different attitude to those who remain and work in 'service' industries in France.

Funny story, many years ago I worked in a company with French people. They used to spend the first half hour of each day exchanging body fluids and halitosis, and the next consuming foul tasting coffee and foul smelling cigarettes. Just before Christmas this particularly unattractive skinny blonde, who thought she was hot stuff came into my office to wish me 'appy Christmas'. I put my hand out to shake hers but she wanted the full Monty and bought her face close to mine, saying :
"I want to give you a French kiss."
She meant the stupid air kiss, I had to explain to her - not with a practical demonstration - what civilised Anglo Saxons understand by 'French kiss.'

Morning folks, bit cool and cloudy for my 06.00 walk but it may burn off. Got a digger going backwards and forwards behind our hotel room. Nothing to do with the hotel. I have just heard the hotel owner tell the foreman that he had told them they had to finish by June. He is not happy. People arrive off ships as late as 04.00 and want to sleep in.

Thursday - town day but a bit far to Maun. Will phone instead.

Used to get really cheap beer here in a tin from the shop at 1 euro for 500 ml. Seems to have gone. Now summat called Oettinger same deal, seems OK. Never heard of it.

Persisting down again in the Royal Borough, gardeners have arrived and left again, only one days work left, but don’t want to turn garden into mini- Glastonbury, so are coming back tomorrow ☔️☔️☔️
When all else fails, read the instructions.
