I suppose that there are some savings by not shipping whatever is pealed off, and I assume left in China.Mrs Ex-Ascot wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 10:38 amThis is truly eco unfriendly for several reasons; ready peeled garlic shipped to the UK from China and packaged in plastic pots imported from Belgium.

Why do people need ready peeled garlic FFS.

I wonder if it was potted in China or Belgium. Probably bulk shipment to Amsterdam, truck to Belgium and thence UK.
I think as bad, not always plastic, it tourist tat for any Caribbean island made in China. FFS, why cant local expertise create their own tat for export.

Most of the garlic we use comes out of a jar. It may be an epicurean faux pax but we use it mostly for wok stir fries and a few recipes that call for garlic. The garlic is finely minced, keeps forever in the fridge, it's always ready, and you just spoon it out of the jar. It's made by Christopher of Gilroy, California, the garlic capitol of the US. A quart jar is around $5 US, I think. I can't taste any difference between that and fresh-peeled garlic. For garlic bread and toast we use standard McCormick's garlic powder, mixed with melted and warmed butter. Otherwise I shy away from garlic powder and salt.
Garlic provides a unique and indispensable flavor and it's good for you, too. No need, as far as I can tell, to ship it around the world and back.

Interesting programme on BBC1 (War on Plastic) about single use plastics. They showed the number of Single Use Plastic items in an average street in east Bristol and extrapolated this to the number for the entire UK, which figure I've forgotten but I think it was SEVEN BILLION.
They also discuss the appalling tendency that people have to buy bottled water when tap water is at least as good and usually better, at a fraction of the price.

Bottled water ain't good because the plastic polymers of the container leach into the water itself - esp in hot wx. This can also be done by the pallets of the stuff sitting outside in the sun waiting to be taken inside the market or shop, not just at home.
Back in Thailand we have the main filter outside downstream of the pumps. In the kitchen it's fully filtered by osmosis - the same way Derek got inside Joan Crawford's stomach.

As a 'litter-picker' I can vouch for the abundance of plastic bottles that I retrieve from along the riverbank (washed down from upstream) and in the village itself - far outnumbering metal cans - although within the village the plasticised cardboard coffee cups outnumber the plastic bottles.

I thought my eyes were plying tricks on me when I saw Mrs Ex-A posting a link to the bile of the left.
In fairness, it does have some excellent articles about environmental matters.
(I meant to type BIBLE but I thought BILE was very appropriate!)

Here in Santa Monica, CA. the local supermarkets have banned take-away plastic bags at the check outs, but ... we've just bought a chocolate confectionary item measuring approx. 10"x8"x1", sold on a plastic tray and encased in a large hard shell plastic bubble measuring 12"x10"x6" - 1of about 3 dozen on the shelves. Madness. Wot's wrong with a cardboard tray and a paper bag?

Interesting to see that the odious Mark Carney has said something helpful and true for once :
Capitalism is part of solution to climate crisis, says Mark Carney
Mattha Busby, The Guardian
Capitalism is “very much part of the solution” to tackling climate change, Bank of England governor Mark Carney has said, report the Guardian and others. In an interview with Channel 4 News, Carney “gave a strident defence of the economic system predicated on private ownership and growth but said companies that ignored climate change would ‘go bankrupt without question’”. Bloomberg also reports Carney’s comments. “The costs of ignoring climate change are rising. The opportunity of doing something about it, those are rising. That’s what the system does. It shifts money away from where it’s costly, towards where it has opportunity,” he said, according to Bloomberg. Press Association also has the story.
