Apparently she had been surrendered when her owners went into a retirement home. Unbelievably intelligent. Let her out to do her business 9:30ish pm and she disappeared into the shadows. Winter here so very cold and dark. Wandered around looking for her - nothing. Thought go back and get a torch, and there she is sitting at the front door waiting for me to let her in. This was only nine hours since first arriving. She knew exactly where she now lived.

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Thanks, Alison - it's always good to know that she came from a home where she was 'appreciated' rather than abused, even if she had to be parted with (due to circumstances).
We have had two previously-owned dogs that had less than satisfactory previous existences - both of which required 'adjustment' - one had a history that emerged by chance when she suddenly turned from a remarkably placid animal that would tolerate young children but drew the line at an adult male wearing an overcoat and a hat, the other was totally unsocialised having been a breeding bitch on a puppy farm.
The latter eventually experienced all the things that she should normally have had and lived-out her final years as a puppy, despite being eight years old when she came to us (and being totally deaf).
My daughter taught her hand signals to which she responded and she would look back as we walked her off-lead for 'instruction'.
Who said that you couldn't teach old dogs new tricks?

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
If our experience with a dog who arrived in similar circumstances is anything to go by, she will love you from day 1, but will suffer severe separation anxiety for a while if left alone, or even without her main 'owner'. Eventually, she will realise that even if you go out, you will return.
Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Thing is AFAIK a dog can't sense time. You could go out for 5 mins or 5 hours or 5 days. All the same to him.
Probably explains why if you lock your missus and your mut in the boot for a few hours, it'll be the pooch who'll be damn glad to see you when you open it!

Alison - wishing you and your new dawg many happy years together.

Dunno about not being able to sense time, they seem to be able to tell when it's time for regular things to happen, e.g. walk, someone arrives home at the same time each day etc. Whether they can tell duration or not I don't know, but the important thing to them is that you will come home.

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Neighbours dog has his main meal of the day at 1200 every day, at 1150 without fail he goes and sits alongside his feeding bowl. He also gets a dentastick at 1700,at 1655 he sits outside the cupboard where they are kept.
Our late dog was from a rescue home, we were his third owner in 6 months and he was 9 months old when we got him. For the first week he left little puddles and mountains all over the kitchen floor until we realised that he was frightened of being shut in. From day one he would always do as he was told which made us think he had been beaten if he didn't. At first he always wanted to be near someone but even when he had settled in and become part of the family if we went out without him he would go up to the kids bedrooms and pinch their teddies out of their beds and put them in his basket. We had fourteen wonderful years with him until he went over the rainbow..

We have been extremely lucky over the years (since I was a toddler) with never having a dog with undesirable habits such as damaging furniture or possessions (neither those of humans or the dog).
Worst was the Staffie (stone deaf ex-breeding bitch from a puppy farm) that would howl if left outside a shop - no problem leaving her alone indoors.

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Ours were all destructive as puppies but have grown out of it (youngest is still not 100% trusted). We might be able to get around to repairing the gouges in the walls now. We didn't bother after Faraday, on the basis that Kepler would probably have caused us to do them all again, but they do seem to be confining chewing to approved items now.
Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Still follows me around the house. Went to the loo and she pushed the door open to make sure I was still there. Due a scrub and brush up tomorrow from the lady who does a mobile dog wash. Possibly trim and oil change as well. This is how she looks now - gorgeous. Wasn't happy getting onto the sofa, obviously previously trained not to. She stands just over knee high. With her brindle colouring and mane could easy be a lion cross.Hydromet wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2019 2:24 amIf our experience with a dog who arrived in similar circumstances is anything to go by, she will love you from day 1, but will suffer severe separation anxiety for a while if left alone, or even without her main 'owner'. Live in a small complex of a dozen semi-detached town houses, with a driveway down the middle. She's been in at least half the houses to visit. Have a queue of retired neighbours wanting to take her for walks everyday.

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Our dogs will come watch the process, it's not unusual to have an audience, and if I'm apparently sitting there for some time, they'll expect some fuss and attention.
Re: Cute Pet Pictures
This is Faraday on the couch yesterday.
Then she did a half roll to sleep inverted.
As an aside, that wooden thing behind the couch is a custom flight crate for a full-grown Leonberger. Tesla crossed the Atlantic in that back in 2014.- Wodrick

I recognise that look Ric, from last night. Had about 150gms mince meat about to cook up into a mince curry to have on toast. And SHE is looking at me and her bowl of brown pebbles. Needless to say a third of MY tea ended up in HER bowl mixed with her pebbles - raw mince of course. Wolfed them down like it was the last supper.

Re: Cute Pet Pictures
General tip for feeding dogs: only do it in one place, or at least only one room, and preferably not where you eat. That's something we learned the hard way, with dogs attentive to every bite and eternally optimistic that because they once got a treat, it might happen again. Our current dogs have learned that it's less effort to lie on the floor between us and their feeding place so they know when it's time to get up and act hopeful, because it's just not going to happen until someone gets up.
Re: Cute Pet Pictures
Not quite as cute, more sad. This is Tesla today. she has a hole in her foot that got infected, so one of her front paws is 50% larger than the other. The cone of shame for a Leonberger is impressively large, something over 18" diameter at the front. She's quite good at getting it through doorways though.

While you'd need a crate for a Leonberger, for your othger dog you'd probably be OK with a Faraday cage.
Collar, lead, I'll take myself for a walk.
