I think flogging off the manuals for cash from Russia is what did it.

Mid-air drama as RAF scrambles two Typhoons to intercept Jet 2 aircraft after passenger 'tries to storm the cockpit and attacks cabin crew' shortly after take-off from Stansted Airport before being pinned down by passengers

Two RAF Typhoons from RAF Conginsby intercepted a Jet 2 passenger jet
The Quick Reaction Alert was launched to escort the jet back to Stansted Airport
Eyewitnesses confirmed the woman tried to storm the aircraft's cockpit
A woman, 25, was arrested on suspicion of assault and endangering an aircraft
More overkill. I am all in favour of taking the strictest action against disruptive passengers but surely launching a brace of Typhoons is an OTT reaction. Shouldn't that action be reserved for when an a/c doesn't respond to ATC instructions and this presents a danger?

Maybe more to this than we will know. Anyway I hope the woman is
- banned for life from using any form of public transport
- charged with the full cost of the exercise and made to do public service until she has paid off the debt.

Cape, I don't for one moment think the crews involved regretted a bit of unscheduled flying in Saturday and better, banging Essex.

PS, at TOP someone made the valid comment that the crew said 'cockpit secure ' so ATC reacted as if there had been a hijack attempt.

As for what can the Typhoons do "shoot it down" ? Exactly, shoot it down before it is flown into Buck House or similar.

I didn’t know that the RAF worked weekends and they must be used to loud banging in Essex :))

Had that level of threat been established? It seems it was one drunken/drugged up young female wearing a skimpy top. Serious threat?

Agreed, but why should the cost of that come from public money?

1. The time between assessment and reaction is critical.

2. True but there will be a budget line entry for QRA and it is 'spent' one way or another. If not spent on QRA it might go into what was an infamous underspend budget. Quite the norm to have a round robin in January seeking bids for projects to spend the underspend.

Steady on, last unit I was on only did QRA 0900 Monday to 1700 Friday. Pleased to say, the Ruskies honoured the weekend too and I don't recall a Friday scramble.

Unlike their Navy where the Subs would sail on a Monday and transit UK waters over the weekend.

But we didn't need AAR and could dine off proper plates.

There are a certain number of practice scrambles anyway. A 'real' one like this cancels the need for a practice, so the cost to the taxpayer may well have been zero extra to normal ops.

There's a lot of loud banging in Essex of a weekend anyway ;)))

I guess the transit time from Coningsby to Essex at Warp Factor 1 would be measured in seconds :D

Not exactly news as we read about that miscommunication last week as I mentioned from TOP above.
