Standard of living and outside influences
After the thread of DPRK started drifting towards the standard of living of its people and how it is impacted by outside influences. So one poster here believes people in NK have a lower living standard because another country being in war with NK makes them suffer. However other countries manage to live fine by using assets responsibly and having a sound political systems.
Similarly a lot of people say that if oil and gas are available big companies will overthrow the good and decent national governments to steal those resources away. So both Nigeria and Norway have hydrocarbons but very different way to spread the wealth generated by it. OK Norwegians still make a mess about oil by letting their Navy being at the wrong place and loosing a frigate (when a tanker exports the said oil) but people still live better there than in Nigeria.
So is it people, governments or outside powers who influences the most how well people live (we all agree that people in NK do not live well and people in SK live fairly well).

Re: Standard of living and outside influences
Nigeria is a stinking corrupt mess run by a bunch of thieving third-world savages who only have their own interests, and not those of the people they purport to govern, at heart.
You could also mention Venezuela, a similar situation to Nigeria. Angola is another country proving that the potential from massive hydrocarbon wealth does not equate to a decent standard of living for its people.
I think that is your answer in a nutshell.

Of course The Tories have made a complete arse of trying to run the UK, but Boris is going to sort it all out
When all else fails, read the instructions.
Re: Standard of living and outside influences
It is entirely ludicrous to imagine that the standard of living among North Koreans has not been affected by the war of 1950 which was first fought militarily then since the armistice economic and trade warfare primarily by the USA.
If the US trade and economic sanctions have not had an affect why does the US persist in using them?

Obviously you haven't been paying attention, John Hill. The US strategy regarding North Korea is simple. The US does not want a nuclear weapons capability to reside with an unpredictable regime which would have the capacity to incinerate our allies in Japan and South Korea, and possibly develop the technology to threaten the US itself. Contrary to your assessment, I think the sanctions are working in North Korea just as they are in Iran. President Trump knows what he's doing and the pressures he is imposing on the world's bad actors are starting to tell.
Re: Standard of living and outside influences
NK is in that position simply because it wants to be. That is the chosen method by which successive leaders and the privileged few have adopted to keep their population in check and subservient. No amount of sycophantic posts by John Hill will change the reality of the nightmare that is North Korea. I suspect that the Chinese are also getting pissed off with them but, for the present, regard them as useful idiots in keeping the Americans relatively far away from their borders.

Re: Standard of living and outside influences
The coverage I've read about Boris' domestic skirmish paints two pictures. One is that he is an ogre, the other is that it was a political set-up orchestrated by a Lefty neighbor. What's the truth?
UK needs a good man to execute Brexit, and my inclination is that Boris/Farage is a good combo to meet not only that end but reverse the damage done to the UK since Maggie left the scene. Like President Trump has done.

Ben, Sisemen, the USA has been fighting this economic war for 60+ years with never any result to show for it. There is a name for keeping on doing something expecting to see a different result.
The US divided Korea putting Rhee in charge in the South while Stalin put Kim in Pyongyang.

Re: Standard of living and outside influences
You may not be aware John Hill, but the GDPs of both the US and South Korea have grown exponentially over the last 60 years. North Korea's? We don't know but it pales in comparison.
So who's doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? Consider your relentless bashing targets.

Re: Standard of living and outside influences
The DPRK is under constant economic attack which kinda inhibits development of GDP.
