Re: Getting hot in the Gulf
I used to know someone who worked with this kind of intelligence. The threat is very rarely able to be narrowed to one entity by name, but there is sometimes enough to narrow it to a date, a place, or a nationality to be attacked, and the threat may be further narrowed by deductive logic. Quite often, the point in the process that the threat is discovered allows a narrowish band of dates to be identified, based on previous cases. If, for example, a bomb was reported to be being assembled, then because the terrorists tend to do this only very close in time and place to use, it allows the time and place to be guessed at quite accurately. If intelligence obtained in London reported a small bomb was being assembled in Cairo, and only BA flies London-Cairo, then that would be deemed a good reason to alert BA. There are not that many terrorist bomb-makers, and they certainly used to specialise in certain types of bombs (that's in the public domain), so that could be an indicator also.

Lufthansa also cancelled their CAI flights today, but are planning to fly tomorrow.Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2019 7:02 pmBA suspends flights to Cairo for 7 days - unsafe. Sounds like there's a airline bombing or hijacking threat.

BA say they are still assessing the threat.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

As this has the potential to evolve into a "controversial topic" I have relocated it accordingly.

Is Australia involved in this? If so, how?
Been in data comm since we formed the bits individually with a Morse key.

We (Aust.) are probably involved...how?....However the US tell us we're involved.

Re: Getting hot in the Gulf
I believe that Australia has one known naval asset in the area on rotation.
Afghanistan and Middle East Maritime Security
Operation SLIPPER is Australia's military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism, maritime security in the Middle East Area of Operations and countering piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Around 1550 ADF personnel are based within Afghanistan as part of Operation SLIPPER, while about 830 personnel are deployed across the broader Middle East Area of Operations.
Australia has maintained a continuous maritime contribution to Operation SLIPPER, which currently consists of the ANZAC Class Frigate HMAS Toowoomba.

New Zealand also has a P3 Orion operating in the area for some time this year following NZs last involvement in the area in 2008.

Bet the UK wishes it hadn't given up its Gulf presence at Muharraq, Sharjah, Salalah, and Masirah now.
Re: Getting hot in the Gulf
Does anyone know the frequency of sailing of the tankers of a particular country (eg UK) through the Straits that would prevent, if necessary, timing of passages so that a RN ship (yes, I know...) could 'accompany'? Alternative would be a small armed group of, say Marines, embarked for each 'crucial' bit of the passage.

18 maximum; triple carriers on 6 stations.
So a pair of jets should be able to take out an entire gaggle of Republican Guard attack boats, and the mothership and its helicopters, and the fighter top cover, if it comes to it.

Re: Getting hot in the Gulf
Guess how long it would take to get a 'Q' ship bid for, designed, built, tested, and approved?
Even assuming you could find people to crew it.
Would you crew a 'Q' ship with the rules of engagement the Government is likely to hobble you with?
Then come home to be tried for Islamophobia for shooting a shi'ite?
