4ma, the shape of that lump is very similar to a sacrificial anode which is normally fixed to metal boats or rudders to prevent corrosion damaging the main structure. The colour is a bit strange, maybe a corrosion product.

There is no fathoming them *PN*
Henry usually greets me normally, you know wagging, happy etc obviously pleased to see me.
Just now I come home in a showerproof jacket.
Barking, cowering, no wag, I don't understand.

When I was a teenager, I acquired a 'rescue' dog that was being kept in kennels paid for by the (previous) owners.
This dog was mild-mannered and would allow our toddler to ride on her back, using her long ears as 'handlebars'.
One day, my father entered the room whilst wearing an overcoat and a trilby hat - she went for him with unbelievable anger and aggression - until he removed the hat and coat, after which she returned to her usual placid demeanour.
The implication was obvious.

Yes, that incident happened while I was based at RAF Northolst; I was on the late shift so didn't see the accident, but the Tower controller on duty actually put out the crash call moments before the crash. Basically they were too high and too fast, the rest is history. Luckily the medivac helicopter G-HEMS was holding to the North of the runway waiting to cross when the crash happened. It was the crew of G-HEMS that told us that the first officer bopped the captain on the nose.
I got the job as a non-witness to do the tape transcript which was fairly entertaining especially as the pilots were both Spicks. Apparently the flight deck recorder revealed that they had been arguing all the way down the approach. So hence the blooded nose.

Painful night and strange day...
Decided to have an early night after a long day only to be wakened at around midnight by our aged dog who sleeps in her basket upstairs and whose back legs are going (she is 17 years old now). I decided to carry her down stairs only to trip and wrench my knee and woke up at 03:00 hrs in agony. Took 2 Ibuprofen but couldn't get to sleep and was tempted to knock the session of light aviation I had planned for this morning on the head, but a gap in the infernal clag prompted me to ignore my fatigue and sore knee and persevere. Started off with a couple of circuits and managed to sound the stall warner on the second landing only for it to continue sounding, blaring away stuck all the way around another circuit for a full stop to take the aircraft to maintenance and took off again later to find that which was once CAVOK had now morphed into IMC.
Sitting sipping coffee and watching the perennial clag roll by. Haven't managed yet to accidentally put salt in my cup of coffee. It is Friday but not the 13th thank goodness! Knee is still hurting and I initially managed to post this piece of trivia on its own thread... Going to sit on my hands for the rest of the day.

The anniversary of my beloved cat's death nine years ago from kidney failure. Put to sleep at the vet. He, whom among other amazing feats, prevented me from intruding into a nest of wild boar one night. Known to all in the street as a practical joker, party-goer and friend to small dogs. RIP.

I understand your feeling OFSO.
TGG I hope the leg is better now.
Slasher is the moonshine a clear beverage? I am trying to see if it is like raki. Maybe Ex-A can help with the description.

It may have some connection with an increase in the number of households with lilies being used in cut flower displays. Some varieties produce a lot of pollen which may get onto a cats coat - the cat may brush past or lie on fallen pollen. The cat then ingests the pollen when cleaning itself. The pollen is toxic and causes kidney failur.

Don't normally have flowers in the house, but all of our cats have spent lots of time in the garden.izod tester wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 2:54 pmIt may have some connection with an increase in the number of households with lilies being used in cut flower displays. RiS I don't think it is. This is an excerpt from my book describing Raki:Rwy in Sight wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 2:53 pmI understand your feeling OFSO.

Slasher is the moonshine a clear beverage? I am trying to see if it is like raki. Maybe Ex-A can help with the description.
Do you actually know what
raki, or tsipouro, is? If you have drunk it you probably can’t
remember or were past caring! Essentially, it is a strong
distilled spirit usually produced from the must-residue of the
wine press (pomace). Thus, producing raki is an autumn
activity. The name is dependent upon the area it comes from.
In Turkey raki has an aniseed flavour, like Greek ouzo,
whereas raki in Greece has no additives. It is just plain rocket
fuel, containing approximately 45 percent alcohol by volume.
The strength can vary enormously depending upon the
temperature at which it is distilled. Although history is a little
vague it appears to have been started by Greek Orthodox
monks – well it would be wouldn’t it! Records indicate that it
was first produced during the 14th century on Mount Athos
in Macedonia.
A considerable amount of raki is made on a small scale
on Amorgos. A considerable amount of raki is also consumed
on Amorgos. After making the wine, the pomace is put into
large barrels and water added at a ratio of 70 percent ‘gunge’
and 30 percent water. These are sealed up and left to ferment
for a month in the sun.
The fermented pomace is placed in a copper boiler
which is traditionally heated from underneath, with a fire
built from the prunings of the vines. The boiler has a long
copper funnel which passes through barrels filled with cold
water. As the hot steam is cooled, it condenses and liquidates.
In approximately an hour, the warm raki begins to fall, drop
by drop, on the other side of the funnel. The process lasts for
many hours, indeed days, during which the owners of the
boilers must taste for alcohol content, increase or decrease the
heat and finally stop distillation when the raki has acquired
the desired taste and strength. We always try to be on hand to
assist with this arduous task and keep the distiller awake. The
donkeys are still recovering from the time a certain hotel
owner in Langada fell asleep and the raki overflowed into
their field. You often see donkeys rolling on the ground but
they usually get straight back up, not just lie there, with their
feet sticking up in the air!

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
My cat suffered from high blood pressure, discovered too late, which damaged the kidneys. Common in large ginger cats. Very much a P G Wodehouse type gentleman of a cat, to whom I was his Jeeves. Used to go up the mountain road looking for cocktail parties, and wait outside for an invitation. Kept large dogs firmly in their place. Allowed small admirer dogs limited worship. Loved work, provided it was me making things (angle grinder, drill etc) and he could sit and watch.
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
Yes, our senior cat, who will be 18 in a few days, is on that path too. She still seems happy enough with life so she's still here. I hope she'll just go to sleep and not wake up one day, a final trip to the vet would be distressing for her.

Oregon is on my list of places for possible retirement, although it's in danger of that big earthquake and follow-up tsunami, so I might be a bit more selective about exactly where in Oregon.Alisoncc wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 4:36 amSpent a fair bit of time up your neck of the woods Boing. A long time ago worked for Tektronix for five years, and used to visit Beaverton pretty often. Got into Portland a few times. Back then I thought if I was ever going to live in the US it would have to be Oregon.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread IV
The advantage of Oregon is that you have multiple climate zones. From west to east you have the wet coastal region, then a range of mountains that dumps most of the moisture, next is the valley area which is basically UK climate, as you go further east you reach the high desert that is dry but hot in summer and cool in winter. From north to south you have UK climate changing to northern California climate in the south.
Away from the urban regions real estate is reasonable if you don't need to drive to work.
Yes, there are supposed to be possible earthquake areas but, sure as heck, nothing like sitting on the San Andreas fault.
We are a couple of hours from a 12,000 foot mountain with skiing, a little over an hour from the coast, about ten minutes away from the Columbia River and there are little airfields all over the place if you need one.
The only argument against Oregon is that southern Washington could make more sense if your tax situation is considered.

Wodders, your wretched weather has just made the long journey up the coast and arrived here. It's peeing it down. Only plus point is it's about three degrees warmer than TTLN.
