Yes, it’s self-driven with a dual-stage blower. 6 forward and two reverse gears. As well as a battery it also has a mains connector to start it which is a real boon.

I have something almost identical, a Husqvarna, as my backup/pathway blower. It dispenses with the battery (important with our severe cold), and starts by pullcord or mains connector. Since it starts second pull every time, I've never used the mains connector.

Are blizzards a bigger issue for you?

My bad memory - mine hasn't got a battery - you jogged me into remembering it's a pull start like yours but with a mains option. It's a Stiga. We get nothing like your amount of snow but our problem is the wind causing drifting across the fields. Further down the driveway in the photo it drops below the height of adjacent fields so that can fill up to about 6 or 8 feet. That's when my farmer neighbour digs me out with his JCB. Most of the farmers hereabouts have contracts with the local authority to fit snow blades to their tractors and they supplement the snowploughs. Ours is a Category 3 road so has the lowest priority for snowplough clearance. Not bad though - we usually get one through here about 1100 on most days that we have snow.

My road has the snowplow director's mum living on it, so the official Category doesn't matter a bit - it gets done sharpish! ;)))
I am on a corner, so my driveway can get a 7 foot barrier across the start when the plow makes the turn. Fortunately the local farmers are like yours, and in passing will take 3 huge scoops out of it in 30 seconds and massively reduce my workload. The previous owner of this house had a plow truck, an old unlicenced heavy duty pickup with a big blade on it. I may eventually get one, but am going to try snow fences this year.

I find that the guy who runs The Weather Outlook is fairly accurate in his long range forecasts. Here is his winter forecast published on 1 December: https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/fore ... r-forecast .Somewhat different to the forecast of Nathan Rao’s replacement in the Express!

I always favour a longish harsh cold winter and a really hot with frequent heat-waves summer. In the last few years we get mild ones.

In North Thailand we have to suffer Winter dawn temps down to a frigid 10-12C but fortunately it only lasts a month, give or take a few days.

In Maun I understand it can get even lower, which is snow blizzard conditions by comparison.

How in blue blazes do you get out of your nice warm bed every friggin’ morning? I’d just stay in it and hibernate with the lecky blanky on 3 until mid Summer!

Well, in -48, one mostly does stay in, to be honest. -40 is OK for a walk if it's sunny and there's no wind, which is generally the case in the Prairies. The question is whether it's worth the bother getting dressed and undressed*. It's very important to both dress completely before stepping outside or you get frostbite, and undress immediately getting inside or you are a ball of sweat. Once the temperature is warmer than about -20, then one can just put on one outer layer if one is doing something active. It's only rarely worse than -20 in the Maritimes, though it's a lot windier than the Prairies. -40 and no wind is nicer than -20 and gusting 30kph.
The big thing for me is the sunshine - I get twice as much sunshine as the UK in winter here, and mostly the sunny days are completely clear skies and little wind under a high pressure. The snow and icescapes are endlessly fascinating, and I shall be getting some kind of snow vehicle next winter. On stormy days, of course, you can die just trying to get 50 yards to the barn, so then one does stay inside also. That said, it is deeply pleasing to be sat in a warm house with the woodstove going and looking out the window at wild weather.
I also like the people, pretty much all of them. There's something about a country with a proper winter that makes people more pleasant, I've found. Nobody thinks twice about lending someone a hand, I think partly because you know they are already putting their best efforts in themselves. I found the same way up in the Yorkshire Dales too, where there are only single track roads and one gets snow.

*The trick is layers. How do you know if you have enough layers? Pat yourself down. If you can still tell what gender you are, you don't have enough layers ;)))

Fox - when you’re able to amble out of the house in just your underdaks at 7am to fetch the paper, and walk back again while waving at next door’s 20yo daughter wearing a skimpy top, you’ll appreciate how I can’t fathom anyone willing to live in a climate like that unless they get generous trading stamps or tax credits.

I do know what it's like. I have spent winters in southern Arizona, Oman, and Florida/Caribbean. Interestingly, snowbirds from here seem to prefer heading south in March/April, which is after proper winter when there's a lot of grey skies and slush. People from the Prairies go south in Jan/Feb to escape the extreme cold. On balance, I prefer 4 seasons, but will probably take a two week vacation somewhere sunny in late March/Early April. I am getting my barn rebuilt so I can do workshop stuff in future winters (there'll be a woodstove in there too).

So true.

However Slasher is usually right on a warm hot day you can see directly and clearly the assets of a lady to brighten your day. Although some ladies are so good that no coat can cover their best points.

Also Fox3WheresMyBanana has a point about end of winter blues if I read it right. I got there a lot while I was in Belgium.

Yeah Slash, but Yellowknife's a dry cold. :D

'Course it's gonna hit -30 here tonight. Par for January.
The pressure at the center of that low that gave the Newfs all that wind and 75 cm of snow was 28:20 in Hg.
