I remember the 3-wheel coal burning lorries in Liverpool around 1950.
And the gas bags on the top of cars during WWII.

I only remember the coalmen dropping coal down the coal hole which was in front of the house.
My maternal grandparents lived in a Durham mining town.
The residents were mainly miners and got deliveries of free coal direct from the pit (when it was still operating).
The back-to-back houses had their coalhouse in the back yard (together with the outside netty), but the coal was dumped in the back lane and had to be shovelled by the tenant.

As there is no news from Oz one might conclude the fires are now out and thus no news.
.....
Seriously though, what's happening?
Rain, Rain glorious Rain
Nothing quite like it for cooling the brain.

Rained from 2:00am to 8:00am, and not your average UK rain that just dampens down the occasional errant hair. Oz rain is big lumps of water that batter people into submission. This was the kind of rain that catches the unprepared, washing them down the storm water drains. :-bd :-bd

Even Dog enjoyed it. Rolled in large muddy puddle, then dashed between my legs to finish off on the lounge room whitish carpet. Which is no longer - whitish that is. Used to be quite house proud, then I got a dog. [-X

As for bush fires, they tend to go out when there's bugger all left to burn. Driving around my neck of the woods out of town, all you see are blackened tree stumps and bare ashen soil. A few more days of this rain, if we are lucky, and it will spring back to life. The dried out lawn already has a light green tinge to it, in just a metter of hours.

Alison, good to see you have been getting some rain in your neck of the woods, here in the Gosper Mountain fire area we only had a light sprinkle ,not enough to fully wet the ground.I went for a drive on the weekend up to Bilpin and the devastation up that way is complete with various area still smoldering.I feel that it is going to take a lot more than the forecast rain to bring these fires under control.
One thing is certain ,sooner or later we will get enough rain to bring life back to those trees and grasses that have not been burnt beyond hope.I would like to think that it is sooner than later.
The Tv news last night had an article about how the Wollemi Pine trees was saved from the fires, the aerial view of the copse shows how close the world came to losing them https://www.news.com.au/technology/envi ... 853b64a3f6

Cloudy here but no rain as yet. +5C.

Off to blood straining in a while accompanied by Mrs HF who has been invited
for training to help me out should I ever be in need. Never a dull moment.

Rain after the fire and regeneration of the forest: A fire can be healthy for helping the seeds already on the ground but covered by the largest existing trees. However it is vital not to destroy the new plants - ie letting sheep have lunch there and not to have a second fire for a decade or two.

I hope it works fine from now on for those in need.

Thank Alison, wonder if the BBC has reservations in case of flood.

Sounds like a desert, I suppose it is very much a semi desert. On Ascension we had floods, no proceeding fire. Lasted about 4 hours, dug out ditches, washed roads away, restarted waterfalls. Next day the arid lava was changing to green, grass sprouted, when it reached a foot the whole detached, became tumble were and scattered seeds ready for next time. 10 days later it was bare lava again.

Here in the West we’ve got fires in the south and floods in the middle and north which has been declared a natural disaster zone!

Tell the BBC quick, it might save a few air fares unless the flood experts are different from the fire reporters.

One hears that Ryanair's new 737 MAX aircraft won't be called that. Any ideas here for a new name ?

Wodrick make sure you don't get the Gastro Enteritis from SM.

OFSO take your time with the electronic equipment.

C16 how's that hearing claim going.
Claim form, letter and copy of my War Pensioner's Certificate were all sent off first class post on Wednesday to the Royal British Legion Veterans Hearing Fund. My audiologist has said he'll provide any information needed. As receipt of a lump sum compensation payment is one of the accepted prerequisites I'm confident of getting through the first stage but as for the second stage, who knows! They are saying it could be more than 5 months for a decision on that due to the number of applications.
At the outset I was told it would take a year. Things seemed to be moving with January hopeful. I am now told I am in the pile and it may be April, ie a year.

When I rang the British Legion I was read out a proforma letter which basically said they were running out of funds and no new applications were being accepted.

The annoying thing is you don't want to go ahead and buy your own only to have them suddenly agree to give you them. I can envisage them trying to cut back on what you get, maybe no TV link, maybe other features. I guess the other problem is the review panel may only work part time.

Is an oil burning auxiliary system viable to cover the start up period?
I believe that someone did produce an oil burning steam car.
How about this?

My sister lives in the Claremont area of Perth and is unaffected by the bush fires to the north of the city. However, she is affected by the high temperatures!
