A billion here and a billion there adds up.

We will soon be talking about serious money!

I know that this problem is seriously affecting BA, Virgin Atlantic and Norwegian, suppose that there’s more.
When all else fails, read the instructions.

One hopes it is not like the Rolls-Royce RB211 all over again! As we all know it bankrupted Rolls Royce.

A bit more about the issues with the Trent 1000 TEN engine here.

Trent 1000 TEN
Issues with the redesigned TEN-model HPT blade emerged following a “detailed technical evaluation” of the proposed redesign.
“Although we regret that the blade will not be ready when we had originally planned, our understanding of the technical issues has significantly improved,” Rolls-Royce CEO Warren East said.

The issues with the Trent 1000 TEN also have implications for the Trent 7000 powering the Airbus A330neo. Rolls-Royce had planned to introduce the HPT blade from the TEN-model onto the Trent 7000 once it was available, but the development delays mean a later introduction to the Trent 7000. The company says it has been able to plan maintenance capacity and spare engine provision to safeguard against customer disruption.

And suddenly I’m reminded of the 1970s disaster with RB211 carbonfibre fanblades which nearly put the company out of business.

I trust the new titanium leading edges (razor sharp?) will do a proficient job of shredding the Canada Geese who will inevitably stray into the giant maw of the Ultrafan?

Highspeed movies of the testing should be interesting viewing. I just hope they get away with it and it becomes a commercial success!

Agreed this Ultrafan topic could be merged from Crewroom chat to Eng/Tech.

Lots of discussion re the gearbox but nowt so far on composite fan blades v Canada Geese. I would have thought one of these would not threaten the gearbox integrity but could present a RB211 type hazard to the blades. Time will tell. I trust the birds will be defrosted before being fired at the blades as per the legend from the early days of windscreen testing......... =))

I didn’t realise these new razor blades had been in development this long;

‘Twud make me wonder if there have been significant problems occurring during the last 8.5 years.

Some more old stuff on the saga;
