You can watch neoliberalism collapsing in real time. Governments whose mission was to shrink the state, to cut taxes and borrowing and dismantle public services, are discovering that the market forces they fetishised cannot defend us from this crisis. The theory has been tested, and almost everywhere abandoned. It may not be true that there were no atheists in the trenches, but there are no neoliberals in a pandemic....

I observed that the news out of the USA is that even the best case number of deaths will exceed the numbers who died in the Korean and Vietnam wars combined. Now, we've all seen many of SciFi's apocalyptic predictions yet no one thought of a world where we might face such a huge loss of life while our ability to order furniture on-line from Ikea went undiminished.
But it's not all gloom. The kids, for the most will be safe and, if my grandchildren are any measure seem to be having a great time. (Being a regular Guardian reader I know this will not be universally true. There will be plenty going hungry and subject to abuse.) Yet we have this technology. A real-time HD video call between the UK and Germany is literally child's play. While humans must stay put data flows uninterrupted. Even such a trivial joy as Ops-Normal can still function uninterrupted. This is the age of communication miracles juxtaposed against a backdrop of exponential curves.
And another bright spot. When these lock downs are over there will be a huge amount of overdue sex to catch up on.

Tedros Adhanom ,the Head of the WHO ,made the statement on 03 Feb that it was not necessary to shut down international travel as China had things under control and then on several other occasions since went on to praised China's handling of the virus and its miraculous recovery.
Most of the data that the Chinese gave to the US in the beginning has proven to be false and useless.
Finally now even the media are beginning to realize that China has been intentionally dishonest about the virus.More and more reporting is comming out how several doctors who had tried to pre-warn the world have either died of the virus or have totally disappeared.

"Wet markets" are as awful as they sound. Such markets, which are found all over the world, sell live and dead animals—often of a variety of species—for human consumption. They are called "wet" because water splashes over the sides of open tubs containing live sea animals who will inevitably be killed and countertops and floors are streaked red with the insides of gutted chickens and the blood of other slaughtered animals.
A Chinese wet market is believed to be the origin of the novel coronavirus, but wet markets also exist in New York. Closing off these sources of infectious diseases—both here and abroad—is an absolute necessity, and doing so will help prevent future outbreaks.

Reports from Italy are telling us that people are beginning to break into stores to get food.
The stay at home orders are beginning to destroy peoples ability to earn money to buy food.At least here in the US the Fed are tyring to give financial assistance but in countries like South Africa the governement has no money to give to the people.
The fear by some now is not the virus but rather the insurrection that is beginning to build pressure like a boiler with a stuck release valve.
I cannot imagine the residents of Soweto, used to their shebeens, calmly accepting that they are not allowed access to beer or cigarettes. It won't be long and the looting will start.

On the latter point I concur, and, as much as you and I love SA, we are a special case (I ended up shooting rioters from a CASPIR and I tended to agree that they had a grievance) as much as we want the best for people
Still, we need to be disciplined, this virus is running rogue, and you run rogue so and I will shoot you too... 6SAI

" and you run rogue so and I will shoot you too... 6SAI"-there is a really intelligent and mature comment.Mind you it is the kind of thing that Bo might find entertaining .
