Islington, streets emptier than usual and shops restricting numbers that can enter, but otherwise life as normal. No empty shelves, don't even know if there are pensioner's shopping hours, no police checks. People distancing but smiling and saying good morning. Very pleasant. Only annoyed that churches are closed. I know He is everywhere but I still like to pop into His house on Sunday morning for a chat.

Sorry to see that Lord Bath has died due to the Coronavirus. Respectful post on the Where Are They Now 'Left us in 2020' thread. :((

Our village GP surgery was ahead of the game when on 5 March it stopped the morning walk-in surgery, locked the doors and made everything by appointment. I don't know if this is common elsewhere but now they are offering a new service for us - secure video appointments using "NHS Near Me" when you don't need a physical examination. Potentially very useful in these times. You have to ring the receptionist for an appointment and just before the appointed hour you log on and wait in the virtual waiting room until the GP comes online to you. I haven't used the live facility yet but tried the recommended equipment test call with my iPad and it all connected smoothly. The video is more aligned to hospital appointments but still valid...

I have just looked at myself in the mirror, and while being confounded by my 'strange unnatural beauty', I realised that my hair is standing on end and that I am in bad need of haircut. Should I purchase a pair of hair clippers and try and do it myself, in the full knowledge that I am a klutz when it comes to such digitally fine skills and am more likely to lop off an ear than produce a pleasing haircut? Should I yield to the tender mercies of a potentially malevolent better half who may exact almost two weeks of Corona co-habitation irritation on me.

I ask for advice from the folks here.

Mrs OFSO, having done an excellent job on her front and sides, requested that I trim the back. Pressing the button that releases the sideboard and beard trimmer on my Philips shaver, I did so. Not bad. Perhaps a few straight cut lines too many. I'd suggest having a towel handy to catch the droppings, and perhaps a bottle of PVA in case you go too far and need to put some back. And if you are cutting your wife's hair, invent an excuse for turning the mirrors face-in to the wall.

TGG, I have quit visiting barbers since 2012 but there is much less hair area to attend. I would suggest a trimming machine. They have some adaptors where you can set the length of hair and goes uniformly.

However please use caution besides the machine.

I invested 20 quid in some electric clippers and Mrs 1DC inflicts the damage whenever we think it is required, as long as you are happy with a number one all over it works quite well. You do have to suffer the sadism associated with eyebrows and ears. On the occasion that she forgot to put the number one comb on the clippers and gave me a head shave she just told me not to worry about it because the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is only a week..
Hope this helps!!

Much good advice here, thanks for all of that. I liked the Age of Aquarius solution, namely "let it fly in the breeze option", being a hippy at heart and naturally lazy but my better half won't let that go so I am going to go with the electric clippers set to no. 3 and let my better half have her way with me option. I shall report on the result although Ribrash has just given me pause for thought. :-o

I may just have to tell her "I have a headache darling" and put off any messy business for another week! =))

Take Hugh Bonneville 's advice. Take the lot off, you aren't going anywhere.

I am on my second pair of hair clippers in about 20 years. Have not needed a barber, hairdresser or anyone of that nature for the whole of that time.
I started of using the No.2 comb but now use the No.1, all over the head, equal length. Do it myself, no need for a helper.

Must have saved hundreds of pounds over the period.

I enjoy my visits to my barber, he is a barber, not a hairdresser, and I have a haircut and a shave.

Having someone shave me is one of the few luxuries left when one gets really old.

In the little town, actually a jumped up village, I live in there are two barbers, a typical British barber and a Turkish establishment that does a full hot towel with razor beard cut (no throats). I frequent the traditional English geezer place but was amused to see the manager of that emporium sneak across the road to the Turks for the beard thing a couple of weeks ago. Both now shut...
