Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
I recently had a SSD die on me.
It was of course my boot drive, so I have reverted back to a HDD and re-installed Win/10.
I had a back up, but it was of course not as up to date as it should have been, but it wasn't a crises. Most of my data is on other drives anyway.
Of course installing Win/10 from the CD meant updating to the latest level. This was done and the installation of applications commenced.
Restoring my Thunderbird Profile was a challenge! But I fixed things by renaming a directory from kwktiggi.default to 4h45ntq5.default-release!
After installing Ifanview, I discovered that I could not change the file associations of JPG files, by right clicking on the properties tab! I had to go into Control Panel to do the change.
Bah Humbug.

And yet another convenient change.
Rebooted and up pops the offer of setting a PIN to log in. No, perfectly happy with my password. I select No. Up pops a window requiring me to log in again. I do. Up pops another window for Pin and Reenter Pin. I don't and click next. Up pops another window You Must Enter a Pin. FFS.
Once in it proudly displays a new desktop picture set Up.
FFS I just want to get in to MY COMPUTER.

That’s why I don’t do W10 updates, and on the rare occasion I do it’s done in the presence of a rated guru who can um...unsex any sexups.

Re: Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
Just noticed the very latest 'emergency' update to 1909 (KB4551762) restricts install to Windows Store programmes only. Why!!? Thank M$.
Luckily that has been sorted!

Re: Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
Them in Seattle have done it again!
My PC's, both desktop and laptop, have been 'acting funny' since last week.
Various programs the use the Internet, wouldn't. They gave error messages, some indicating proxy problems.
My ISP is currently useless as the help desk staff are on lock down as none essential.
Brave, Chrome and Edge wouldn't work. Firefox did!
Giggle Earth, Skype and WhatsApp didn't, Thunderbird did!
After much trouble I've reset Win/10 to an early restore point, but what finally fixed things was removing updates.
I've of course stopped update, again, but one cannot make it permanent.
Now I have to attack the laptop.

Re: Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
Task bar vanished for Google Chrome after comp crashed.
Re: Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
Confirm what you mean by 'Task Bar'?
Menu Bar
Google in their wisdom think you don't need it! God bless 'em?? You can find MOST of what you need in the 3 dot drop-down, but not as convenient as the Menu Bar.
Go to the web store and look for the menu bar by stefanvd. That has selectable options and positions itself NEAR the top below the bookmarks bar (or at the bottom). Icon is a small black square with a white cross on the right of the main bar. Will not work on ALL sites eg Goggle

Re: Menu Bar
Thanks. The strange thing is that it hasn't vanished on the Firefox browser.I just wonder if its the age of the computer and the use of XP.Boac wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 8:49 pmGoogle in their wisdom think you don't need it! Re: Another unnessesary change in Win 10!
Goggle has no grip (as far as I know) on Firefox! Chrome is Goggle's own browser. Purely down to Goggle, not M$, I'm sure. It is difficult to avoid Goggle, but - be advised - using Chrome increases the hold Goggle has on your data and 'preferences'.

And bloody MS. Switched on this morning to see MS Office running an update.
Outlook opens fine, except it can't send or receive emails.

Best solution I have found is to run a repair on Office.

Just done it and rebooted.
To my pleasant surprise, it worked.

At the Seth Efrican Win/2K announcement Micro$oft handed out 'evaluation' copies of Win/2K and Office 2000
I dropped Win/2K some years ago, Office 2000, I am still evaluating
