Always wished I could catch a ride in one. Very few operational in the US now.
My ride on a 747 however, at 14 hours non-stop (JFK to JNB) still stands as my longest (time) flight.

My longest flight was Miramar to Geilenkirchen involving two tankers.
Left California with a balmy 20° and arrived in GK with -2° and sleet.

What airline did you fly with?
SAA flights used to land on the Ilha do Sal en route to the USA at one stage in order to top up. All flights over the African continent were avoided due to political differences etc.

I think that every airline stopped somewhere. Until the 747-400 and MD11 came into service the a/c simply couldn't take off from Joburg with enough fuel to reach Europe.
To my knowledge/experience, UTA stopped in Brazzaville, Sabena in Kinshasa, and Swiss Air in Nairobi.
Having typed that, I've just realised that none of them exist today! The airlines that is, the cities do.

SAA used to stop at SID on the way to all of its European destinations. I think one or two also stopped in LAD for passenger pickup. It had one flight that went JNB LIS ATH TLV. I got offloaded once in SID, Christmas Day, I was travelling subload and they had a weight problem (not quite sure why as obviously its at sea level) and they put me up in their screw, sorry, crew hotel, the Atlantico, which was like a dog kennel on stilts about a stinking mudflat population by howling rabid dogs. All you could get was warm beer, cold coffee, and crayfish. Fortunately the flight crew had warned me and gave stuff off the aircraft to eat.
Unbelievably, people now go the Cape Verde Islands on holiday.

It was SAA 202 Capt Dave Ellerman. Spent a few hours up front discussing Mike Beachyhead and his operation at CPT. 13:56 wheel to wheel. My only ride 'upstairs'.
The FA wasn't dumb. She loudly announced that there were multiple locations below where it would be possible to stretch out for three seats for the 14 hour ride.
We went from 50 people up top to about six. MUCH less work for her!
