Good morning.
Another sunny day, presently 19c with a high of 28c mentioned in despatches.

The Comet 4 was also good at destroying hearing.

Some of you have clearly never been on Vickers Vanguard with those powerful RR Tyne engines that make the whole aircraft vibrate. Your fillings popped out, your tin of Coke would burst open, and you'd get a free massage.

Fast, economical, and a huge capacity, but noisy to the extreme.

The aft-most seat row on an Il-62, sitting right next to the engines, all the way from Moscow to Singapore, circa 1980. Now that's loud!

As part of our home made freight conversions on the Heralds we removed all interior trim including the sound proofing to save weight, this made the inside of the aircraft ideal to appreciate the Dart whine.

I loved the growling howling scream of the Vanguard when taxying and putting the props into flat pitch.

so we were all issued with ear defenders - these were small plastic things like hearing aids but without the electronics.
Like these Ric, issued to us on the line with Vulcans, circa 1963.

15 hours 15 mins, wheels off until wheels on the ground again, sitting with 2 RR Griffons and 4 sets of 3-bladed props on each side of my cranium is my endurance record for a noise experience.
I wore the bone dome for most of that tour in “Perpetual Motion”, as featured on BBC2 some years ago, and as a result I still have very sensitive hearing for a grouchy ould lag of my age. Good for the neck muscles though.
But overall the experience may have driven me towards my posting moniker...

................What I really was worried about was the complete de-commissioned train we've just acquired from Greater Anglia. Up-to-date coaches ready to run. If the sods had attacked them we would have been seriously fed up.
One for your Reverendship. Your new train, as you say is de-commissioned but ready-to-run. Please 'scuse the stupid question, how can that be? Is it simply it's no longer permitted to run on the national network because of some paperwork juggling/ or have some NR* mandatory parts been removed?

* NR = Network Rail, not the usual O-N definition.

Morning all,
Same as, passing 24 for same guess of 28.
Off out for provisions shortly, shopping the highlight of the week.

RAV now booked in tomorrow to see if the oil LP light is a sensor or real, think we are scrapping if real.
Don't need to be buying another car right now.

Three months of almost unbroken sunshine every day ( it rained one afternoon for an hour) in Londinium but today cold and grey. Wierd. OTOH it's been the wettest greyiest nastiest Spring in NE Catalunia.

Here in Jockistan, Dutch National Railways, who now hold the de-nationalised(?) franchise for ScotRail, are using old-fashioned coaches with crappers which flush onto the tracks, even when the train is in a station! :ymsick:

Yesterday while out booze buying, I banged my head on the edge of my raised, not quite enough, boot lid.
I saw stars and bled into my hanky. ~X(

Today I have ordered new gas struts to hold up said boot lid, only R620/£28.90/$36.37 each.

Errmm, maybe you should do so now Alison. I often wondered why you never complained about your time flying Bongo Vans in PNG. :-? :D

Yes, the very same and probably at about the same time as you. We had to have them "fitted" by the MO because there were several sizes. Nobody ever checked whether or not we were actually wearing them when it was "officially" necessary.

Serves you bloody right. Why should you get booze 24 hrs before us. Anyway, didn't rush into town today. One more day on the home hooch will not kills us. Tomorrow we have to replenish the whole bar stock of the safari camp wot we drunk :-o

We are now the proud owners of a worm farm. 100 in there apparently. UP probably has an industrial version with millions of the little bastards.

Unofficial reports say the flood is heading our way at 3 kms a day. Mid month was my estimate ages ago and still looks good for that.

Never found either of the Islanders (piston and turbine) too noisy. Probably too distracted by the reprobate paras down the back doing the mile high club stuff.

I'm sure a search of the Darwin thread might provide evidence that is not always the case! :-s

Another really noisy a/c from a pax POV was/is the DO28 with the German navy. We flew from Northolt to Nordholz (which I thought was a rather nice linguistic link) at 1000ft which made it a rather nice scenic trip. Then later in the week I went with just the captain for a two hour bimble in the North Sea as part of the exercise. Very gentlemanly then we retired to the bar.

Reddo, along with UP you are one of the members here with a life worth reading on a book.
It was pretty easy. Passport stamped. Flight plan filed and accepted, permits done. Cleared for take off. Whoosh. :-bd

I blame it for my duff hearing now and the lack of decent protection. Noisy to stand in front of to clear for start.
Had to be hand signals quite a few had no ground intercom.

SM blames them for the internal noise, the #1 sat at the back unusually, wearing a headset to talk to the flight deck.
A standard Airlite 62 with an extra long lead and a PTT switch. Not exactly noise cancelling.
Repaired a fair few of them over the years.
