In Reykjavik a bottle of duty free scotch would be chucked into the boot of the handling agent's car on the apron and a huge fresh salmon got chucked onto the aircraft. A great deal both ways.
Strange deals were done in days gone by.

At Istres c1957, we had a standing order with the AQM's on the Abingdon Beverley's.

4lb of bacon or pork sausages, got them a bottle of Scotch.
And while the deal was being done, a couple of sliced loaves would be purloined!

A bottle of Scotch cost us 7/6, French bread was no good for fried bread or toast!

We used to do a big fry-up on an Aladdin Stove.

At the end of a long Royal or VIP tour the galleys were loaded with grub particularly from the last sector. It was approved practice to divvy it up amongst the crew. One steward sold a pile of smoked salmon sarnies to his local pub. Bloody idiot, he lived on station, most of the folk in there were Royal Air Force. He went back to a mess.

Come on, someone post a piccy.

Limassol Salt Lake. Can't see any flamingos though. That be AKT runway the other side. Have planted a jet there a few times. Where Mrs Ex-Ascot and I first met. At a bar(OM) of course. You knew I would get that one straight away Woody.

Been out shopping, so I missed that one!

The very flat beach to the left is Ladies Mile!

Terrible for swimming, ultra safe for kids.
Wade out a quarter of a mile and the Med reaches your knees.

It was the only beach that could be reached from Limassol by public transport.
Never went back to Ladies Mile, after I bought the scooter.

Thanks Woody. Sticking to the Royal Air Force. Interesting story about how this aircraft ended up here.

I don't think that is Rio de Janeiro, but it might be East Fortune?

The Vulcan was an amazing aircraft, out standing in its field.

Would that be XJ823 at Carlisle Airport? One of the last 27 Sqn jets to leave Scampton. One its contemporaries couldn't be scrapped cos its leading edges were a bit "warm", so it was parked on an isolated pan until they had "cooled" down (took about 9 months I believe).

Am in town and OM is in the chair. I will give the story behind it when home.

She was there when I stopped there for a night stop in 1988, is she still in one piece?

Is that Vulcan at Sunderland, now hemmed in by the Nissan factory complex?
