RIP Sir Tom.

Yes indeed Wodders. Hopefully they will have a memorial service, maybe on the anniversary of his death.

Pretty sure the way I read it; he had pneumonia for two weeks then tested positive for covid then went into hospital. They must have made an exception for his family to be with him. Problem is where do they draw the line. Only Knighthoods and above?
The wife and daughter of my friend who died on Friday were allowed to be with him for his last day.

Mary Wilson, co-founder of the Supremes, dies. RIP
Mary Wilson, the co-founder of the Motown band the Supremes, has died age 76. Wilson’s publicist said she died suddenly at her Las Vegas home. No cause of death was given.

The Motown founder, Berry Gordy, said he was “extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family”.

“The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown’.’ Mary, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, came to Motown in the early 1960s. After an unprecedented string of No 1 hits, television and nightclub bookings, they opened doors for themselves, the other Motown acts, and many, many others.”

Larry Flynt, the controversial publisher who founded “Hustler” magazine, has died at the age of 78.

His daughter Theresa Flynt confirmed to NBC News that she was with her father, alongside his wife, when he died Wednesday morning at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.

Flynt launched “Hustler” in the 1970s, a print extension of his adult club of the same name that featured nude hostesses. As the pornographic publication grew in popularity, Flynt became the target of critics who called the magazines obscene.

His life has been the subject of films and books, including the 1996 biopic “The People vs. Larry Flynt.” Woody Harrelson was nominated for a 1997 Academy Award for his portrayal of Flynt in the film.

Jazz keyboard virtuoso Chick Corea dead of cancer at age 79
A leader of the jazz fusion movement, Corea played with Miles Davis before breaking out on his own.

By Corky Siemaszko
Keyboard virtuoso Chick Corea, who pushed the melodic boundaries of jazz during his five-decade career, has died of a rare form of cancer, his family announced Wednesday.

Corea, who was 79, had only recently been diagnosed with the disease before he died on Tuesday.

"He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a great mentor and friend to so many," Corea's family said in a statement posted on Facebook. "Through his body of work and the decades he spent touring the world, he touched and inspired the lives of millions."

The family's post also included a farewell message from Corea to his friends, fans and fellow musicians.

“I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright," he wrote. "It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun."

Addressing his "amazing musician friends," Correa added: "It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly — this has been the richness of my life.”

Born Armando Anthony Corea on June 12, 1941, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Corea established himself as a top piano player on the jazz circuit in the 1960s playing with greats like Stan Getz and Herbie Mann before he joined Miles Davis' band.

In the 1970s, Corea formed the groundbreaking jazz fusion band "Return to Forever."

Really sorry to hear about Chic Corea. He was introduced to me by a jazz playing friend back in my university days. It seems like a generation has now passed as we all shuffle on.

Eleanor Wadsworth, last surviving British female pilot from the Second World War

The last of these brave women has gone. I have put her obituary here in full because of the pay wall.

As part of the Air Transport Auxiliary she delivered Spitfires and Hurricanes from factories to their squadrons

By Telegraph Obituaries 16 February 2021 • 5:38pm

Eleanor Wadsworth, who has died aged 103, was the last surviving female pilot living in Britain who flew during the Second World War. She was one of 166 women who flew with the Air Transport Auxiliary, or ATA.

She was working on the construction of new facilities for the ATA at White Waltham when a notice appeared seeking more pilots. “The thought of learning to fly for free was a great incentive [so] I put my name down and didn’t think much about it,” she recalled. Her application was successful and she was among the first six accepted from those who had no previous flying experience.

She joined in June 1943 and began her training at Thame, near Aylesbury, and when she left the ATA in September 1945 she had flown 28 Hurricanes and 132 Spitfires, among a range of other types.

Eleanor Fish was born in Nottingham on October 15 1917; she trained as an architect, but there was little work in the city and she became an architectural assistant for the ATA.

She went solo after 15 hours’ flying time, and her first task after gaining her “wings” was to fly the “air taxi”, an aircraft used to shuttle pilots to factories to deliver aircraft and then return them to their parent airfield. As she gained more experience, she too began delivering aircraft to squadrons.

On a delivery flight in December 1943 she ferried a Fairy Swordfish. With her trussed up in her Irvin jacket in the open cockpit, it took four days to get through very bad weather, staging through three airfields before arriving at Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre.

In February 1944 she had gained sufficient experience to fly fighter aircraft, and first flew a Hurricane the following month. After delivering a number from the Hawker factory at Langley, she progressed to the Spitfire, which she flew for the first time on May 18. By July she was flying twin-engined aircraft.

On one occasion she was flying a single-engine Fairchild Argus to collect a crew after they had delivered a Lancaster bomber. Just after take-off, a piston failed and flew through the engine cowling. Reacting quickly, she immediately turned for the airfield and made a safe emergency crosswind landing.

From October 1944 Eleanor Wadsworth was based at Ratcliffe near Leicester. In one month she flew 10 different types of aircraft, including 20 Spitfires. The famed fighter was her favourite: “it was so perfect to handle, just lovely and flew like you would want it to. They had a beautiful, throbbing engine in the front. It was so responsive, light to the touch. Like a beautiful sports car, really.”

In April 1945 she delivered a Spitfire Mk V AR501 from Ratcliffe to Catfoss near Scarborough. This aircraft is now based at the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, and recently completed a long-term restoration to fly. Eleanor Wadsworth had a photo of 501 as she is today proudly placed in her logbook.

She left the ATA as a Third Officer in September 1945, having flown 600 hours on 22 different types of aircraft.

During a conversation two years ago, Eleanor Wadsworth commented: “I was part of an exclusive wartime sisterhood, a group of courageous, individual gifted women, who in very dangerous circumstances delivered a huge range of types of aircraft to service squadrons.

“It was a fantastic organisation, and it was incredible that it was got together as a functioning organisation in such a short time, that had grown from nothing at a time when the RAF could not cope by releasing pilots to collect aircraft from factories.”

She was particularly proud that “we were the first to get equal pay for equal work. We were years ahead of our time in what we did, but also how we were paid like for like.”

After leaving the ATA, Eleanor Wadsworth started a family, and in 1958 she and her husband moved to Bury St Edmunds, where she later worked for the brewer Greene King in the surveyors department.

Her role in the ATA, and that of her fellow “Spitfire Girls”, was largely overlooked until the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown was persuaded to honour them with a commemorative badge in 2008.

The Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace commented: “It was ordinary people doing extraordinary things that defeated fascism and we should never forget Eleanor’s example and achievements.”

Eleanor Wadsworth and her husband, Bernard, were married in Nottingham in 1945 by the Bishop of Egypt and Sudan, who was in the city. Bernard predeceased her, and she is survived by their two sons.

Iain Pattinson, scriptwriter on I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, ‘the antidote to panel games’

A purveyor of what Humphrey Lyttelton called ‘blue-chip filth’, he left a high-flying career behind to join the anarchic radio show

The funniest game show ever, but I thought it was all spontaneous wit from 'Humph' and the crew. :(

Iain Pattinson, who has died aged 68, was the scriptwriter behind I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, the anarchic “antidote to panel games” on Radio 4, famous for its smutty jokes that have made it cult listening for nearly half a century.

Hired in 1993 by a new producer, Jon Naismith, Pattinson furnished the show’s chairman with a weekly script bookended by a discursive introductory monologue and an ornate final farewell, interlaced with the show’s regular features like One Tune To The Words Of Another and the impenetrable round known as Mornington Crescent.

As chief writer on Clue (as fans know it), Pattinson set out to make every line blameless on the page but, thanks to the deadpan delivery of successive chairmen (Humphrey Lyttelton and later Jack Dee), open to alternative interpretation.

As the Telegraph’s radio critic Gillian Reynolds pointed out in 2014, the listener then becomes the one with the dirty mind. “When the words are said innocently,” she explained, “the entendre becomes more deliciously double.”

The fact that many listeners were astonished to realise that the show had a script at all was as much a tribute to Pattinson’s professional legerdemain as to Humphrey Lyttelton’s world-weary urbanity and Jack Dee’s sardonic “attitude”.

As Pattinson remarked after Lyttelton’s death in 2008: “There can be no greater compliment to the performance of a script than for the audience to fail to notice there is one.”

After writing the chairman’s script Pattinson would often come up with lines for the rest of the show, about half of which was written and half improvised.

Almost uniquely within BBC Radio’s comedy department, Pattinson had arrived after a career in industry, having left the Shell oil company with a generous payoff when he was 38 to try his luck at scriptwriting. His appointment as “programme consultant” was a watershed moment for Clue, likened to the appointment of Eddie Braben as scriptwriter to Morecambe and Wise.

With characteristic self-effacement, Pattinson credited the show’s enduring success to Lyttelton, the show’s original host. Lyttleton (who famously acclaimed Pattinson’s scripts as “blue-chip filth”) had, he said, made things 10 times funnier than they were when he wrote them: “Which is the opposite of what usually happens.”

One historian of Radio 4 recalled the huge laugh that greeted Lyttelton’s poker-faced account (minted by Pattinson) of the nymphomaniac phantom “scorer” Samantha buying an ice-cream with her new Italian boyfriend; she was going to spend the evening, Lyttelton unblinkingly explained, “licking the nuts off a large Neapolitan”.

In 2014 Clue weathered controversy after complaints that the show’s weekly innuendos about “the lovely Samantha” were sexist and disrespectful. When BBC management suggested toning down the Samantha jokes, Pattinson threatened to resign, followed by Jack Dee.

The show’s creator Graeme Garden shared their indignation. “Samantha has been giving us a hand for longer than it would be gallant to say,” he noted. In the event Samantha survived, but alternated her appearances with her Scandinavian colleague, the “rippling” Sven.

Pattinson also ventured into television. On the panel show It’s Only TV But I Like It (BBC, 1999-2002), hosted by Jonathan Ross, celebrity guests had to climb into a giant television set and mime the title of a well-known TV show.

Abetted by Jon Naismith, Pattinson persuaded the veteran actor Leslie Phillips to mime Pie In The Sky with the aid of an enormous polystyrene pork pie suspended above him on a thin wire. When the wire snapped mid-mime, the pie fell on top of him, knocking him to the ground.

Fearing concussion, Naismith ordered a medical check-up but to Pattinson’s relief the star was deemed well enough to continue.

Pattinson enjoyed pricking pomposity as much as he liked teasing. After checking in at one particularly smart hotel ahead of a Clue recording away from London, the receptionist appeared distinctly unimpressed that such a shabbily-dressed writer was one of their paying guests. After accepting the keys to his room, Pattinson asked if a Mr Brooke-Taylor had arrived.

“Yes sir, room 420” said the receptionist indicating a telephone. Pattinson dialled the number before announcing in a voice that rang round the hotel lobby: “Mr Brooke-Taylor? Your prostitute is in reception.”

RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet, publisher, painter and political activist who co-founded the famous City Lights bookshop in San Francisco and became an icon of the city himself, has died aged 101.

Ferlinghetti died at home on Monday night. His son Lorenzo said that the cause was interstitial lung disease.

Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York in 1919. His father died before he was born and his mother was committed to a mental hospital, leaving him to be raised by his aunt. When he was seven, his aunt, then working as a governess for a wealthy family in Bronxville, abruptly ran off, leaving Ferlinghetti in the care of her employers. After attending university in North Carolina, he became a journalist in 1941, then joined the US navy during the second world war. While studying for his doctorate at the Sorbonne in Paris on the GI Bill, he began to write poetry.

Underwear

BY LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI

I didn’t get much sleep last night
thinking about underwear
Have you ever stopped to consider
underwear in the abstract
When you really dig into it
some shocking problems are raised
Underwear is something
we all have to deal with
Everyone wears
some kind of underwear
The Pope wears underwear I hope
The Governor of Louisiana
wears underwear
I saw him on TV
He must have had tight underwear
He squirmed a lot
Underwear can really get you in a bind
You have seen the underwear ads
for men and women
so alike but so different
Women’s underwear holds things up
Men’s underwear holds things down
Underwear is one thing
men and women have in common
Underwear is all we have between us
You have seen the three-color pictures
with crotches encircled
to show the areas of extra strength
and three-way stretch
promising full freedom of action
Don’t be deceived
It’s all based on the two-party system
which doesn’t allow much freedom of choice
the way things are set up
America in its Underwear
struggles thru the night
Underwear controls everything in the end
Take foundation garments for instance
They are really fascist forms
of underground government
making people believe
something but the truth
telling you what you can or can’t do
Did you ever try to get around a girdle
Perhaps Non-Violent Action
is the only answer
Did Gandhi wear a girdle?
Did Lady Macbeth wear a girdle?
Was that why Macbeth murdered sleep?
And that spot she was always rubbing—
Was it really in her underwear?
Modern anglosaxon ladies
must have huge guilt complexes
always washing and washing and washing
Out damned spot
Underwear with spots very suspicious
Underwear with bulges very shocking
Underwear on clothesline a great flag of freedom
Someone has escaped his Underwear
May be naked somewhere
Help!
But don’t worry
Everybody’s still hung up in it
There won’t be no real revolution
And poetry still the underwear of the soul
And underwear still covering
a multitude of faults
in the geological sense—
strange sedimentary stones, inscrutable cracks!
If I were you I’d keep aside
an oversize pair of winter underwear
Do not go naked into that good night
And in the meantime
keep calm and warm and dry
No use stirring ourselves up prematurely
‘over Nothing’
Move forward with dignity
hand in vest
Don’t get emotional
And death shall have no dominion
There’s plenty of time my darling
Are we not still young and easy
Don’t shout
Though you remain
Convinced
"To be alive
You must have somewhere
To go
Your destination remains
Elusive."
