Re: Windows Update May 21
The 9 is a cheap version of the 8 with no fingerprint scanner, only one camera lens, a slower processor, half the storage and many more bits of cost reduction. It was designed as a starter phone for people who never had one before. Using both phones together I can see the difference, but as I've said I wanted a cheap phone for one purpose, connecting to the local national health network with a PAYG card. It's not my main phone. I will concede that the 9 is still a bargain at €93. The 8 is a far better phone but cost €129. You pays yer money and...

Boca, firstly in my area it's very hard to find a Huawei phone on sale any more. Reason is obvious. Secondly you can side-load all of the denied technology but then you don't get updates. And thirdly, technology moves in and prices fall. By my seat is a Huawei Media pad, made before The Ban, and it's really excellent, but now after The Ban, I wouldn't buy one.

You mentioned finger print scanner. Since I have used one I would not change. Mrs PN OTOH can't get it to recognise her print. She had a problem with US immigration too. Working your fingers to the bone is very true.

I miss the scanner on the 9, on the 8 it unlocks many vital apps. However the facial recognition system to unlock on the 9 is excellent, works every time, very fast.

I thought the scanner was a standard equipment on mobiles even the low end one. It is so practical I can't think use the mobile without a finger scanner.
After the first start of the day the mobile asks for the locking PIN before it allows access to the app page.

My Cubot, 2019, was well under €100, no scanner then. It's the usual technology drift down as high end phones get yet more bells and whistles. Samsung ones can even measure O2 levels now.

Three days since charge and backup Redmi 9 is still on 72% battery. Mobile data on, What's App and G mail connected, Cat Meteo radar on display. Frankly I am gasted with flabber.

Re: Windows Update May 21
Took the Version 21H1 update of the Windows May Update last night in a fit of reckless abandon and my fingerprint reader immediately stopped working, in fact all the Windows Hello features fouled up (the update allows camera recognition as well). I rolled back and then tried again and it all seems to be working now!

I read some prelims where opinion was underwhelmed. Will it be a free upgrade? A subscription model like Office 365 makes sense. Where is the money on Windows OS?TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 6:40 amThe next one is here...Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 6:29 amJust wait for the next one. I guess it must be in OEM licencing agreements.

Vindoo's 11....
His review is actually very good and my childish, and hypocritical, reference to his accent is reprehensible!

I wonder who actually upgrades or uses it. Our NHS Trust uses Vista. NT is also around. If a business is to switch it will take a considerable efficiency hit in the short term as users get to grips with it and have to call the IT department or guru.

Reports I've seen suggest that if your computer is older than 2017, or has a CPU older than that vintage, then it's not going to work with Windows 11. Good job I run Linux, my current PC dates back to 2013. I built it to last and it's doing pretty well so far.

My 'puter is 5 years old, I5 processor and the W11 compatibility checker is unequivocal "Your computer is not suitable for W11 upgrade" .
That's a relief

Re: Windows Update May 21
I had a nice little Toshiba windows 8.1 tablet that I bought directly from Microsoft.
I was very happy with it, using it on trips for browsing, e-reading, and watching movies stored on the microSD card and streaming videos as well.
It handled everything quite well.
When Windows 10 was released I started getting pop-up notifications to upgrade for free, which I eventually did. Bad decision.
Tablet became instantly useless.
I took it to the Microsoft store and was told in no uncertain terms that I shouldn't have tried to run MS 10 on that device. I countered by telling them that Bill Gates had offered it to me for free.
They took it in and took quite a few days to get it right again.
I used it a few more years before it died an electronic death and Microsoft was unable to resuscitate it. By that time it was out of production so I had to move on to something else.
At least they now will tell you "Your computer is not suitable for W11 upgrade"
