What is called 'Hake' in SA isn't bony.

When it is smoked/dyed it changes into 'Haddock".
Did the link open for you?...It is Orange, white inside, flakes easily into sections, NOT bony, sold as Seth Effrican Smoked Cod in Oz for more than 40 years, turns out it may be Hake, should be rinsed before cooking also, it is very salty

What fish is like a 'ray'?
Skate?

Maybe my bony experience was skate?

It was 70 years ago . . .

Rays and skates have no bones, but instead have skeletons made of cartilage

I like Skate, one of my favourite fish.

We used to get plenty of it in Joburg, but I can't remember ever seeing it down here in KZN.

In Johannesburg in my callow youth, skate was used as a slang word for "disreputable guy" or "show off" as in "hey check that oke, he skeems he is a main skate, the main majolah, but he isn't"... =))

Nothing to do with fish (in Johannesburg at least) mind you but as a well spoken Englishman you might not have tuned that far into the local southern suburbs argot ian16th! The mean streets of Mayfair were full of main skates (nothing to do with skate boarding either). Dates back to the 50's or even earlier I think ;)))
Skate
This is Westcountry slang dating back to before the First World War. Skates are very slippery fish and the name was applied to people who had slippery natures in that they were untrustworthy, would try to avoid giving information or were just not very likeable. The use of the name expanded to include people who were wheeler dealers or people who do a lot of ducking and diving but no actual work. The name is disparaging but at the same time may hold just a hint of reluctant admiration. It is, however, a warning as a skate has no conscience and is totally unscrupulous and untrustworthy. The term is believed to have been used extensively by the British armed forces and was used to describe someone who was a slippery customer, fishy and who avoided their share of the work

22nd July is International Shiraz Day, which means that there is something to look forward to this week :o)

Things got pretty bad for this Bondi spearfisherman until a quick witted pilot drone jockey called for the lifesavers to go out and pick this guy up.
