Climate Crisis!!!!
Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
A local waste incinerator was closed down.
They later discovered that the ash had been spread by the council on allotments and used to surface the surrounding paths, and they all had to be dug up and disposed of.
Burner inquiry told of toxic ash.

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
G CPTN, that was 18 years ago. Do you know their conclusions?
Deconstructing materials can create unknown side effects.
We used to you Magnox tapes, large spools and the tapes about an inch wide. We asked Magnox for a COSH assessment when it was necessary to dispose of them. No issues they said.
I wasn't satisfied that they had been asked the right question or given the right answer. I insisted they be told our disposal method which was mechanically saw the tape into short pieces to get it off the spool and then put it in a volumatic disintegrator until it was dust.
The assessment was changed to hazardous and toxic.
Same with incineration of plastics; not all plastics are the same. Safe at point of use but not necessarily safe in disposal.
As a child I made plastic models and enjoyed watching the waste melt and then burn on the fire. What went up the chimney?

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
There used to be a high temperature incinerator in the Japanese City where I (pre covid) spend 3 months of every year flying a Glider Towplane for a full time Gliding Club. It was only about 100 metres from the centreline of the runway and about the same distance to the south of the airfield. The plant was closed down over 10 years ago, although the chimney and buildings are still there. An incinerator attempts to operate at a high enough temperature that most of the toxic gases break down into more basic molecules. Doesn't take all of them out though.
When it was operating, only once did I ever fly a base leg which took me through the exhaust plume!
Damn near spewed my guts up!
You only live twice. Once when you're born. Once when you've looked death in the face.
Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
The local authority proposed an update of the existing incinerator to double the throughput, however the locals opposed it and the existing facility was closed down and the ash was removed (at great expense).Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Sun Aug 22, 2021 7:53 amG CPTN, that was 18 years ago. Since then there is no incinerating facility within the local authority area - it is trucked to an adjacent area - where it is incinerated!

Thank you. "Waste should be disposed of at the closest point of arising".
At one time all the Districts in Lincolnshire bar one used plant near Lincoln. Our District used Bridlington. Why? Because they had a disagreement with the County Council over charges.

My county has an impressive recycling retrieval facility.
Otherwise, the contents of street-litter-bins, together with 'non-recyclable' household refuse is trucked out of county to very large incinerating facility on Teesside.

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
If I am not mistaken either in Vienna or Copenhagen the incinerator is practically a tourist attraction

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
Thanks PN, I thought about it too. And I read somewhere that Scandi countries import household waste to fuel those units. A good reason to live there.
Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
So why is it then that the lefties, who are so enamored with everything Scandinavian, are the first ones to scream "no" when incinerating garbage comes for discussion?
Because they stand on the wall and say "nothing's gonna hurt you tonight, not on my watch".

Because you cannot be trusted to do the job properly.

Maybe because the lefties love to talk and do very little work preferably with no positive result. And as someone have said maybe in TOP Left and the Church need poverty and misery to build their clientship.

Or as the major really meant to say
Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain.

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
Apart from being one of the worst per capita producers of CO2, how does Oz get rid of its waste.
Come to that, how does NZ?

Re: Climate Crisis!!!!
In NZ they get rid of their waste by shoving it up Jacindas' arse.
Her tummy then processes the waste, and what's left comes out her mouth as *****.

But magically, that acid rain doesn't materialize in Scandinavia?Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 7:02 amOr as the major really meant to say

I think R-i-S's explanation is an accurate one.

Dushan, what goes up comes down
Somewhere else
However Honest John perhaps suggests that UK was not an efficient incinerator
