Re: Vigil, Winching and a Sea King.....
I think the Coxswain on Vigil will be the Executive Warrant Officer which would account for his position on the drama.
Re: Vigil, Winching and a Sea King.....
GG- Just so! Must learn to be patient as you and C16 say.
PN - Yes the Coxswain was the senior rating onboard smaller ships and the Master at Arms the senior guy on larger ships. Don't know what their titles are nowadays or what the submariners get up to, especially in the big 'bombers'.

FD2, according to Wiki, from 2005 all the ships and boats have an EWO, E for executive. Similar God like powers as a SWO. In V in Episode 2 he said he was responsible for all personnel matters.

You used the binary conversion to give me half the message. Can you give me the full message using whatever method you want?
You have won the bottle whatever the case! Clearly in the case of steganography I would not have sent the binary as a huge clue...

Yup, go ahead with the stego pic. It's an absolute bitch to decode though. The problem with it is that you can't see the raw data. In most other forms of crypto you start with data which is all part of the message and almost nothing else.
I'm itching to blether about things I learned on that rather pointless crypto course, but FCO is quite anally retentive about that stuff and it's strengt verboten to mention any part of it, even stuff which is open in public documents all over the internet.
The reason I got into Bitcoin at such an early stage was because I set myself the task of trying to crack an actual German Enigma coded message. I Googled for something connected with that project and found the original Satoshi Nakamoto white paper and set about mining a batch of 50BTC. It took my desktop only about a fortnight to break the hash and win my BTC. I went back to trying crack the Enigma code and failed miserably.
It might be fun to try to crack one of the Anthorn VLF signals to the V-boat which is currently on station somewhere far out at sea. I suspect their crypto is probably quite simple due to complacency. One would need the plain text of something like a familygramme as well as the encoded version. With the long nights coming shortly, I wonder if the hippies in the peace camp at Faslane have tried their luck at that.

I am sure you cellar is, but the offer stands anyway.
Complacency, as you say, is the basis for all cryptographic breakdowns...
In normal circumstances I would have hashed the binary hidden in the picture using the SHA-256 algorithm, and, of course, would not have shared the one key and the binary, electronically at all.
Save the image of the Wessex to your hard disk (Save Image As) and use this...

All Mickey Mouse stuff but good enough for hiding stuff from non state actors...
VLF is not a great medium for transmitting information dense messages, as you imply... all good fun of course...

Re: Vigil, Winching and a Sea King.....
A Decca story.
During my last months in the RAF, I was offered a job by Decca. It was sitting on the end of the production line, testing and de-snagging new build kit. I didn't take the offered job, as it was in Surrey and even in 1965 the salary offered was way below what was needed to buy a house in the area.
It was a full day of rather intense 'trade test' type papers and showing them that I knew how to use a scope and meter etc.
At the end they came to pay my travelling expenses and a dolly bird from their accounts asked me what my train fare had been. I told them what I'd paid, and she blurted out, 'But BR told us........' and mentioned a sum about 20% more than I'd claimed.
I pointed out that I had paid for a 'Forces Rate' ticket.
It was too much trouble re-doing their paperwork so I humbly accepted the profit.

The SA Navy has again had to revert to using communication links in Durban and aboard a submarine to maintain contact with the SAS Amatola currently transiting the west coast of Africa en route to the English Channel.
This has been necessitated by the theft of antenna and copper cabling from the Navy’s communication centre at Silvermine, according to Afrikaans weekly Rapport.
