Isn't it the one which has invaded its neighbour, shelling and bombing civilians and threatening a nuclear attack?

Neighbour? Not yet:

There are been others, and still are: eg:

Korea and China 1950-53 (Korean War)
Guatemala 1954
Indonesia 1958
Cuba 1959-1961
Guatemala 1960
Congo 1964
Laos 1964-73
Vietnam 1961-73
Cambodia 1969-70
Guatemala 1967-69
Grenada 1983
Lebanon 1983, 1984 (both Lebanese and Syrian targets)
Libya 1986
El Salvador 1980s
Nicaragua 1980s
Iran 1987
Panama 1989
Iraq 1991 (Persian Gulf War)
Kuwait 1991
Somalia 1993
Bosnia 1994, 1995
Sudan 1998
Afghanistan 1998
Yugoslavia 1999
Yemen 2002
Iraq 1991-2003 (US/UK on regular basis)
Iraq 2003-2015
Afghanistan 2001-2015
Pakistan 2007-2015
Somalia 2007-8, 2011
Yemen 2009, 2011

Plum - your last post here (deleted) succeeded in pushing me to a ban. You and I need a weekend off. See you Monday - if I got the system right.

Dushan-If you go by the recent posts it seems that the history of invasion and war only started after 1945.

European and British Imperialism apparently never ever happened.

The only land that I can recall that America claimed in Europe were the cemeteries where the fallen US Soldiers are buried.

Back on topic, anyone who is interested in Putin's rise to power should be interested in a courageous journalist's account:

https://www.bookdepository.com/Putins-R ... 610&sr=1-1

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Politkovskaya

A brave woman journalist who told some home truths, which got her murdered in the lift to her Moscow flat in 2006.

The blurb:

A former KGB spy, Vladimir Putin is one of the world's most enigmatic figures. This is his Russia.

Internationally admired for her fearless reporting, award-winning journalist Anna Politkovskaya turns her steely gaze on President Putin and his early regime in this explosive book.

From Putin's tyrannical grip on ordinary citizens to rampant corruption in highest ranks of the government, as well as Mafia dealings, scandals in the provinces and the decline of the intelligentsia, Politkovskaya offers a scathing condemnation of the President and his rule, revealing a shocking state of affairs: soldiers dying from malnutrition, parents requiring to bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies and conscripts are being hired out as slaves.

More relevant and important than ever in today's political landscape, Putin's Russia is both a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of an extraordinary reporter.

The Japs very effectively declared war on America by attacking them at Pearl Harbor. Four days later Germany declared war on America, thus forcing them into the war in Europe which the Japanese were not engaged in.
Agreed, but would Adolf have done that anyway, if P.H. hadn't happened ?

Good point Speedy. I'm sure the answer's out there! Did he never suspect he might have bitten off more than he could chew by involving America without the Japanese involved attacking them too? Some reading for me I think.

On several of the forums I grace with my presence, I notice that the theme quickly turns from the horrendous events currently taking place in Ukraine, and switches to WWII for some reason. Personally, I fail to see the comparison. I will confess that my knowledge of WWII is incomplete, because when I was at school the books on WWII hadn't yet been written because it had not long finished.

What I do know is that Russia has invaded another sovereign state without good reason, using equipment which is clapped out and conscripts untrained in the use of such equipment, together with a supply line, which to put it politely, is fractured. From all I have read, this was not the case in WWII.

Could we therefore have a little less willy-waving over wars of long ago and stick to the subject of the thread?

Quite agree, T15, and I have moved the bleating sheep to this topic viewtopic.php?f=64&t=7118 where, of course, they can have free speech (within the rules).

Where is this all going to end up?

A WhatsApp exchange between two old friends struck a chord with me reference this appalling situation.
Friend 1 - "The Ukraine debacle is a sad one indeed. I’ve heard the conflict explained in frivolous terms. A husband and wife quarrel, the husband sympathises with Russia and the wife with Ukraine. He argues that NATO is courting her, luring her to bed, bringing arms into the house. The wife says, “Don’t be silly. Later when they retire to bed, the husband places a knife between them. The wife is alarmed and asks for an explanation. He says, don’t worry, it’s for your protection.

But the analogy is false equivalence as the two had not been divorced for 30 years as the jealous husband demands her back.

Friend 2 - To complete the analogy the husband starts cutting limbs off the wife while she is alive.

Then we have an appropriate analogy
What Russia is doing is insane!

'Tis indeed insane...the lesson Russia has learnt (or their confirmation) is that they can act & do as they wish....

...and this is the greatest threat. The Russian mindset today is such that they will push the limits all the time. I have seen this at first hand over many years in both my professional and personal life. I have no rational explanation for this, except that perhaps after 60 years of being told what to think and do, people are now keen to see just how far they can go. Putin, for all his KGB background would, ultimately, have been under the same constraints as everyone else and I would argue more so in East Germany, which I always found far more depressing and daunting than the Soviet Union. To pass through Checkpoint Charlie from west to east in the 70s was the nearest thing you could experience to a time machine.

I see no easy end to this; Zelenskyy will not give in, nor will Putin. For me, the greatest danger lies in one of Putin's missiles landing in a NATO country, and given the state of his troops and their equipment as seen thus far, I would not be surprised if this happened.

We have long accepted that some countries can do what they like and there is little we can do about it.
