Sausages are being placed in some letterboxes on Waiheke Island, near Auckland, by a Person or Persons Unknown.
Funny old world...

Mystery remains as Surfdale Sausager strikes again
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

It is always a problem if you put your sausage where it isn't welcome.

It is a good something when a major news item in your city, let alone country, is the left over sausage from some swinish sausage sucker in local letter boxes! ;)))

Boris Johnson needed a loan of £800,000 to finance the consequences of his misplaced sausage.

A man whose profligate sausage has resulted in at least 5 children! Such facts are often hard for the fans of the current government to swallow, but there it is!

My chainsaw and splitter paid for themselves in less than 2 years. I treat the work as my gymnasium workouts.
It's said that cutting and splitting your own firewood keeps you warm twice.

Spectacular thunderstorm last night, with a beautiful clear, blue sky today. Forecast max of 31C, and it will probably be very humid. Another workshop day, but I may go for a good walk first.

The firewood exercise is perfect for me, especially as I can just do it on pleasant days and stop when I like.

Not ideal in survival conditions though. I remember an instructor teaching us how to make a Dakota Hole fire.

how to make a Dakota Hole fire.
Care to inform us all how to do so? Might come in handy one day..

Best video I can quickly find on the classic Dakota Hole.

This works well on the Prairies!

If your soil is very sandy, do this

The Dakota Hole can also be built as a right angle into the side (air inlet) and top (outlet) of a dry riverbed bank. I've done this in Arizona when camping.
Be aware that dry river beds are excellent for protection from cold night winds in deserts/prairies.
The ideal situation is finding a two level bed section (not uncommon) and you build the Dakota Hole into the lower bank, sleep on the middle level, and the upper bank still protects you from the winds.
Also be aware that dry desert/prairie river beds can become raging torrents in literally seconds if there has been any rain in the previous 3 days. People die every year through not watching the weather in the days before.
I took some guys camping for a weekend in a canyon, which was delightful. Two months later, another group (not known to me) went up the same dry canyon when there'd been heavy rain rain about 48 hours before. Almost all were drowned when the one survivor told of a 10 foot wall of water that appeared round a bend with no warning (other than the previous rainfall) and smashed them into the rock walls.

If it's much colder, and you have a forest, and need an all night fire, we were taught this.

This is sometimes called a Siberian survival fire, but note the reflector wall of more logs that reflects the heat back into the shelter.
If there are two of you, lay the shelter out so your heads are at the fire end.
I can confirm from experience this works beautifully in -10 Celsius for a night, with a shelter and sleeping bag made out of 1/3 of a parachute. It's best if one of you is always on watch, both for hunters if you are downed aircrew, but also to keep the fire going and to watch for sparks maybe setting your shelter on fire.
You do not need to spend hours building a sleeping platform. Fir branches to a depth of two foot under your sleeping bag will squash down with you on it to about 6 inches, and works great. Just make sure to pick the end fir branches with no thick wood in.

The best laid plans of men and mice....

First, lets return to last Sunday afternoon...
Mrs Hydro has been treated for high blood pressure, and wasn't feeling to well. After we'd farewelled a weekend guest, she checked her BP and it was high, so booked an appointment with the GP for Tuesday. Sunday night, she had a nosebleed, then another on Monday morning, so as instructed previously by ENT specialist, (who made time to see her), saw him and had nose cauterised.
She saw the GP on Tuesday and her BP medication was changed, to start this morning. Unfortunately, shortly after I'd posted, she woke with a nosebleed again. She treated the nosebleed, took the new medicine and rang the GP's nurse, who asked her to monitor her BP every 10 minutes and apply an icepack, 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off, for the next hour. When we were happy that the nosebleed had stopped and BP was on the way down, I made it to the workshop.
After lunch, I did some shopping, then returned as GP was talking too Mrs H to check how everything was going. GP sent an electronic prescription for more new medication, so back to the shops. Finally made it to the workshop at about 1400.
Didn't get to go for a walk, will try again tomorrow. Wouldn't be worried about not getting to the workshop, except that the current project has a hard completion date, which isn't usual.

Through all this, I have to give a big nod to the medical system here. GP + staff, ENT + staff and pharmacist all swing into action when things get really urgent.

I can't believe a trans man/woman whatever anyway a person with a willy who raped two women has been put into a female prison in the UK. FFS.

As we approach Burns Night on the 25th January the Haggis hunting season has been in full swing since last April. Jim Leslie, a Scottish Tourist Guide, takes us through the two varieties of Haggis, how to catch them and why the two varieties remain pure with no cross-mating....
Our local butcher has produced haggis and whisky sausages, which I will be trying tonight, purely for research purposes of course :-?
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Not every day you see a Blue Steel heading down the A1.

Guttering completed, fine job. Tipped both guys €10 each, just under the price of a three course meal with wine here. Can't see locals doing that....

There was a shooting here yesterday, car with French plates.

Certainly would have left the boy racers behind if it had been.
