The Capetonian WOE Thread
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Based on Ex-Ascot's idea, I would have said Gunnison River. Was there last year and looked very similar.

Not there, wrong State, go North West. I was working a fire on the Caribou Targhee National Forest. Between the 2 and 3 minute mark on this video......huge hints
Life may not be the party you hoped for, but while you're here, you may as well dance.

Nope, it is on the border of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and the Bridget-Teton National Forest. On the border of Idaho and Wyoming.

Did you have bonk beds on board for the lucky couples?Hydromet wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:10 pmWhen I ran river rafting trips I told clients that as master of the craft, I could perform marriages, but they were only valid for the duration of the voyage.Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 6:19 pmDid you get your Master's ticket yet?
You can marry people then!

Not a lot of room for bonk beds on a 4m raft, but love will find a way.llondel wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 3:14 amDid you have bonk beds on board for the lucky couples?Hydromet wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:10 pmWhen I ran river rafting trips I told clients that as master of the craft, I could perform marriages, but they were only valid for the duration of the voyage.Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 6:19 pmDid you get your Master's ticket yet?

Having a thread resurrection morning. Do not want Mike's thread to be lost. More clues required please.

OK Ex A, have a go at this one:
This complex was built in Victorian times as a boarding school for children of the very poor - one pupil who lived here for a couple of years later became a VERY well known film star who's picture you would all immediately recognise should I post one. The school closed after about 90 years and many of the buildings were demolished leaving it as the picture. It is still in active use today being well used by the local community.

I think this might be the Dr Barnado's home in Kingston upon Thames, where Leslie Thomas spent part of his childhood. I remember this, because he was one of my favourite authors at the time.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Not Leslie Thomas or Kingston (although it is in the UK)

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
OK. On reflection, the building looks a bit industrial. Is it oop north somewhere?
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
The brickwork reminds me of Birmingham University, Edgbaston, perhaps it is near there.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
It's never had an industrial use. The location is not too far from tango15's guess, you could get to it from there by bus (with one change).
One scene from a well known British film featuring a dancer was filmed in this building.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Would this be the current Hanwell Community Centre? And would a certain Charles Chaplin have been an inmate when it was a pauper's school?

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Exactly right Smeagol, Charlie Chaplin lived in there when it was known as the Central London District school with his brother Sydney for two years around 1896. The film with a scene filmed there was Billy Elliot.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Try this one. I'm sure you can all know the type of flying machine pictured but where is the airfield? No clues yet because there may be one or two here that may just recognise the, very limited, surroundings to identify it.

St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.
Actually an S61NM - a modified S61N especially for the Penzance - Scillies service. Baggage bays accessed externally and the airstair door front right behind cockpit instead of midway down right side. Passenger layout different to North Sea versions with, if memory serves correctly, about 32 squashed in for 20 minute flight out.
