SNP finances turmoil: Colin Beattie quits as party treasurer following arrest
The SNP has been left with no party treasurer, no auditors and a leader accused of being a “lame duck” after Colin Beattie quit his role as finance chief of the pro-independence party.
End
The Herald has this: https://www.heraldscotland.com/politics ... d-meeting/
THE first MSP to be arrested over the SNP’s finances has failed to appear at Holyrood for a meeting.
Party treasurer Colin Beattie, who was quizzed by detectives yesterday, was due to take part in the parliament’s economy and fair work committee.
The Musselburgh MSP is the committee’s deputy convener.
However at the start of the meeting, convener Claire Baker told other MSPs that he would not be taking part.
“I’ve received apologies this morning from Colin Beattie,” she said.
Mr Beattie’s failure to appear for the committee raises questions about his other parliamentary roles.
He is also a member of the Public Audit Committee and chairs the Scottish Commission for Public Audit, which oversees the public spending watchdog Audit Scotland.

Humza Yousaf thrust into SNP treasurer's role as Colin Beattie quits
THE arrested MSP Colin Beattie has quit as the SNP’s treasurer, thrusting Humza Yousaf into the role amid a live police investigation into the party's finances.
Colin Beattie said he was stepping back “with immediate effect” after informing the First Minister and SNP leader.
He also resigned from Holyrood’s public audit committee.
He said the decision had “not been easy” but he did not want to be a distraction.
He said he would continue to cooperate fully with Police Scotland.

The 71-year-old Midlothian North & Musselburgh MSP remains deputy convener of Holyrood’s economy and fair work committee and chair of the Scottish Commission for Public Audit, overseeing Audit Scotland, for now.
Although intended to help Mr Yousaf, his exit potentially creates a problem for the First Minister.
Under the SNP's Constitution and Electoral Commission rules, the party leader automatically becomes treasurer until a permanent replacement is appointed.
That removes any firewall between Mr Yousaf and the party's books amid a sprawling police investigation.
It also becomes Mr Yousaf's duty to "check that donations or loans received by the party are permissible and to maintain the party’s accounting records".
The SNP does not currently have any auditors and faces a series of deadlines to file their accounts for 2022 and certify their spending of Commons funds to maintain access to £1million of state support.
When the MP Douglas Chapman resigned as SNP treasurer in 2021, Nicola Sturgeon automatically became treasurer for three days until Mr Beattie took over.

The resignation of Douglas Chapman as Treasurer in May 2021 says a lot about the state of the accounts when he took the job. He said that he "had not received the support or financial information required to carry out the fiduciary duties of National Treasurer.”

Re: Chaos in Scotland.
It's all in the wording. If you 'step out' you can 'step back in' if the situation arises. If you 'resign' it is more difficult and implies 'admission' of wrong-doing. Just popping out to my holiday campervan home while the Polis do their thing, so as not to get in the way, don't you know. Treat it as all other SNP nonsense.

Colin Beattie has resigned as SNP treasurer after his arrest as part of a police investigation into the party's finances. He said he would also be stepping back from his role on the public audit committee until the police investigation had concluded.
The 71-year-old was taken into custody and released without charge on Tuesday.
It came hours before First Minister Humza Yousaf set out his government's priorities for the next three years. In a statement, Mr Beattie said he had resigned as treasurer with "immediate effect".
Case closed then.

That's really cleared things up. So he has 'resigned' as Treasurer but only 'stepped back' from the 'Public Audit Committee'. I see. So much for 'The Herald'. Mind you, I sympathise with the paper trying to establish any facts about the SNP............. (or any political party.....)

Re: Chaos in Scotland.
Sadly I'm sure they will - and due to SNP policies Holyrood will continue to fleece those who live in Scotland of their hard earned income. Having just completed my 2022-23 Tax Return using Taxcalc I pushed the button to change between a Scottish and other UK tax liability and saw that as a reasonably comfortably off pensioner living in Scotland I contributed £1621.02 more to Holyrood Government coffers than if I had lived in other parts of the UK for the relevant period. Is it any surprise that Doctors and Consultants are reluctant to move north of the border - just think what their increased tax bill would be, much more than mine.
A nearby NHS Medical Centre with 25000 patients is handing back its contract to the Scottish NHS as it can't recruit any GPs even with Golden Hellos being available. Mrs C16 recently had a Sunday NHS appointment with a Consultant in Aberdeen. He had been flown up from London on a day trip as Aberdeen hasn't got any specialists in that particular field. Alba Medical Group with 9800 patients recently handed back their contract in Dumfries and Galloway. In 2016 52 Scottish Practices handed back their contracts, affecting more than 160,000 patients....and so it goes on. A BMA workforce warning in January stated that 2,300 new GPs are required to satisfy demand in Scotland. That's the result of SNP policies for you yet people still vote for this bunch of misfits! The trouble is the alternatives are not much better.

P S. Once the dumbos at YT wake up to controversy this video may disappear and have to be resurrected on a certain website which receives disapproval by you-know-who!?
This allegation by one of the many comments may give us hounds some aniseed trail to follow as we track the fate of the new FM;
"Considering how few Muslims there are in Scotland what are the odds that the leader of the SDP & the leader of Scottish Labour are Pakistani Muslims? Yousuf is listed as a director of the now defunct Scottish Islamic Foundation. The organisation was essentially an islamist organisation. Its founder Osama Saeed has called for the establishment of a new caliphate which would unite muslims around the world. Saeed is a former aid to Alex Salmond and a former SNP candidate. He is also Yousuf's cousin. It seems fairly likely to me that the overrepresentation of Musims at a high level in Scottish politics is, as is often the case, a result of familial loyalty and Islamist entryism. Of course this is not a discussion a civic nationalist channel like GB news is likely to have but it is nonetheless a part of modern Britain's political landscape. Mock Yousuf all you want but underestimating the ability of Islamists to use the political system for their own ends would be foolish".
However, one has to speculate as to whether the caliphate will conquer or be forced to adapt to the goings-on in Sauchiehall Street if this is anything (one of many, just research the location!) to go by;

Police probe whereabouts of £400,000 worth of bequests left to SNP https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/20 ... -bequests/
Specialist officers are searching company and bank accounts and focussing in on specific items which have been purchased
By Simon Johnson, Scottish Political Editor 30 April 2023 • 5:00pm
Police are examining what happened to monies left to the Scottish National Party (SNP) in deceased supporters' wills, it has been reported.
Specialist officers are understood to be looking at £400,000 of bequests in recent years, including some declared to the Electoral Commission (EC) recently.
More than £1 million has been left to the SNP in wills since 2021, the Sunday Mail disclosed, including £246,000 from the estate of South African-born Estelle Brownrigg that was declared in January this year.
A source told the newspaper: “Large sums left to the party in wills are being looked at as part of the investigation. Huge amounts have been left over the years, including donations declared to the EC in recent months.
“In terms of the independence fund money which has been reported as missing, there is around £400,000 for which officers are trying to account. They are looking at company accounts and bank accounts and at specific items which have been purchased and where funds and items have ultimately ended up.”
The disclosure came after it emerged last week police were searching for "burner" mobile phone sim cards and examining party purchases, including a fridge freezer. So-called "burner" phones are cheap, prepaid devices that users can discard or destroy when no longer required if they want to maintain privacy. Their sim cards can be removed while still retaining text messages and voice recordings.
In addition, officers are said to be examining the SNP’s purchase of luxury pens, designer pots and pans and jewellery. Police Scotland has previously confiscated a luxury motorhome from outside the home of Nicola Sturgeon’s 92-year-old mother-in-law in Dunfermline, Fife.
Colin Beattie, the SNP's long-standing former treasurer, told reporters last week that he did not know about the vehicle and had not signed off the purchase.
He later issued a statement saying he was "unaware of the transaction" at the time and only found out later when he saw the 2021 annual accounts. Both Mr Beattie and Peter Murrell, Ms Sturgeon's husband and the SNP's former chief executive, have been arrested and released without charge pending further investigation.
