Morning folks. Nice day bit of Cu.
Met an old mate here yesterday not seen him for years. He came here from the UK as a teacher of maths and physics on some sort of programme for a limited time many years ago. Met a local girl married her and stayed. Two kids. She died during covid but not of covid. The hospital here was swamped and it is terrible anyway, Couldn't get her to Gabs. He still doesn't know what she died of.

Greetings all,
Showing 22c tealeaves 25c Dome
One or two little things to do this morning. On opening kitchen window for some fresh the catch fell apart and a flush fitting light has blown.
As it is Tuesday the deposit needs checking and some chlorine adding.
Broke another tooth (actually a crown came off) Fang Fettler says nowt to be done another implant required. She has just got a new car, I handed her my wallet.

For those who remember (and sadly one who has passed on) we are luncheoning in Fischers in the Marylebone Road. Happy Days!

Bank holiday up here but only the island's GP & Community Nurse take notice of it (as NHS Orkney instructed). The only time the 2 shops and cafe shut is a couple of days over Christmas & Hogmanay - ferry runs every day excelt for 24/25 Dec & 31 Dec/1 Jan

I remember visiting my great-grandfather (1867-1950) and having to endure sitting on a horsehair settee whilst wearing short trousers - very uncomfortable!Hydromet wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 11:01 pmHorsehair fabric is in demand by traditional chair makers/repairers. It's pretty hard to get hold of now, but a mate found some in a deceased estate auction. He reckons he has enough to last him for the rest of his life.
Another blue sky day, a bit warmer. Currently 16c, 20c max. forecast.

Looking forwards to a visit from the Swan next month. A more acceptable visitor to Orkney than the enormous cruise ships (floating gin palaces/bingo parlours) that carry up to 4,500 passengers!

Mors Vincit Omnia
Strangely funereal air to today, topped off by grey cloud and clag locally
My better half and her sister went to collect their mom's ashes this morning, while I received news that my aunt's husband, uncle Arthur to me, who had served in the Royal Navy and who was posted to Simon's Town in the 1950's where he met my aunt and then subsequently joined the South African Navy, died suddenly yesterday. He returned to Britain with his family some years back and was in good health to my knowledge. He was in his mid 80's.
To add to the somber mood my business colleague just rang me to say that there had been a death in his family too today.
All coincidences but also intimations of mortality I guess as the generations shuffle on.
Off for dinner with my better half's Aussie sister and husband tonight.

I agree on both counts, Ricardian. Those so-called cruise ships are monstrous!ricardian wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 12:31 pmLooking forwards to a visit from the Swan next month. Yes and this year we are being visited by 170 of these "cruise ships", days to avoid travelling to kirkwall!tango15 wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 5:03 pmI agree on both counts, Ricardian. Good morning, sunny day, currently 7.5°C expecting 14°C.
Beautiful sailing vessels limeygal and ricardian.
I remember seeing the Chilean barquentine Esmeralda when she visited Auckland.
The harbours at Akaroa, and Port Chalmers (Dunedin) seem too small for the runaway towns cruise ships which visit.
Appointment later this morning with my coiffeuse; then this afternoon to discuss treatment options with dr re nose lesion. Thankfully no big deal, just noosance.

I recommend (everyone interested in seeing tall ships) to search the internet for 'Tall Ships' and attend, where possible, their nearest local event.
In the past I have attended tall ships visits to Newcastle and Hartlepool.
These magnificent training ships give opportunities to youngsters to participate in sections of this race.

I was in Auckland when she visited in 1966 (working in Camera House in Queen Street). A photographer whom I knew there hired a light aircraft, captured photographs as she entered harbour, flew back and processed them and had them on sale by the time she was moored.Karearea wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 9:38 pmGood morning, sunny day, currently 7.5°C expecting 14°C.

Spent the holiday weekend in a field with Cassini and Faraday. Yes, it was a dog show. Slept in the van, and had the luxury of being assigned a spot next to a barn with available power sockets, so the air conditioning got a good workout. Glad I tried it on the previous weekend and fixed the problem, because it meant I could leave one or both dogs in the van and not worry about it getting too hot. Not going to be so lucky this weekend, field with no power and 33C or so temperature in the afternoons.
